Dave's obituary

David “Dave” “Red” John Swick, age 57, passed away on Monday, October 7th, at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, IA, surrounded by his loved ones.

A celebration of life will be held at Gilroy’s Kitchen + Pub + Patio in West Des Moines on November 8th, 2024, from 6-9 pm. Instead of traditional black attire, we ask that you wear red or Hawkeye gear in honor of Dave. Per Dave’s wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be spread on a family trip to Florida in the near future.

Dave was born to Margaret and Gordon Swick as a Catholic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on December 13th, 1966. He grew up in Blairstown, Iowa, and graduated from Benton Community High School in 1985. He moved to West Des Moines, Iowa, after graduation and worked in sales with Yellow Book.

In 1998, he finally married his high school sweetheart, Kristie Junge, on April 4th from Keystone, Iowa. On January 26th, 2002, their first daughter Gracie Swick was born. Shortly after, on February 17th, 2004, they had twins, Anna and Turner Swick.

Throughout Dave’s life, he consistently worked in sales. He coached his children’s football, baseball, softball, and basketball teams. He took pride in being involved in his kids lives and loved coaching everybody. He loved sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes, the Chicago Bears, and the Chicago Cubs. His pride and joy were his family, but especially his dogs and his cars.

Dave is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kristie Swick; their 2 daughters, Gracie Swick and Anna Swick, and their son, Turner Swick; his brother Dan (Julie) Swick of Fairfax; his sister Cindy (Gary) Veenstra of Marengo; as well as 4 nieces and one nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon and Margaret Swick.

Dave was one of a kind. Always cracking jokes and playing pranks on everyone. His favorite prank was burning people's food with hot sauce. He was best known for his crazy sense of humor. He was obsessed with his fantasy football league and his team, the West Nile Sting. He loved rock music, specifically Pearl Jam and Aerosmith, and forcing his kids to listen to it anywhere he drove them. He loved to travel with his wife Kristie and his kids (if they were allowed to go). He was the cook of the household, which he took pride in and made the best meals for his family every night. He was a friend to all and loved by everyone that knew him.

In lieu of flowers, you may send memorial contributions to Kristie Swick at 6205 Brett Ashley Pl Johnston, Iowa 50131, in care of their children.
