David Henry Schnase, 69, Bismarck, died July 26, 2022, at a local hospital. A Graveside Service will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, on Monday, August 22, 2022, at 12:00 PM, Noon. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be from 2-5:00 PM, following the graveside, at Farwest Rotary Community Center, 1021 Mustang Drive, Bismarck, ND.

Dave was born February 18, 1953, in Harvey, ND, to Gilbert and Lorraine (Heisler) Schnase. He was initially raised on the family farm “London Place”, then moved to Circle Pines, MN, and, after a couple of years, moved back to the farm. His mother relocated to Drake, where he attended school until his graduation in 1971.

Dave enlisted in the United States Marine Corps while in high school and, following his graduation, went to the Marine Corps Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. Following his meritorious graduation, he was transferred to Okinawa, Japan, where he spent the next 14 months. While in Okinawa, he received two meritorious promotions to Lance Corporal and Corporal while also receiving a meritorious mast for his service to teaching Marine Corps history and serving on the Color Guard.

Following his discharge from the military, Dave spent time traveling and eventually, he found himself back in Drake where he married his high school sweetheart Wanda Volk.

Dave started working for Job Service North Dakota in November 1984 as a claim taker in the Minot office. Several months later, he was transferred to the Wahpeton Office as supervisor of the claims division. In October 1988, Dave accepted the position of Supervisor of the Unemployment Claims Tax Division.

In October 1989, he was part of six-person contingency to assist in the intake and processing of unemployment claims after Hurricane Katrina in South Carolina. In addition, in 1993, he was assigned to supervise the Disaster Unemployment Claims Program following the major flooding in Grand Forks and Red River Valley. Dave was promoted to Appeals Referee in 1993 where he served in that capacity until retiring in March 2015.

Dave loved his Savior, music, his guitars, carpentry, fishing, and spending time with family. His great sense of humor brought much fun to his work, people in the general public, and the employees at the retail stores where he spent too much time visiting.

Dave is survived by his high-school sweetheart, Wanda; daughter, Lindsey of Roseville, MN, and Jamie Schell (Bismarck); siblings, Rita (Dave) Tischer, Randy (Naomi) Schnase, Val Ziegler, Wanda (Craig) Mozley, Pam (Don) Allan, Merlin (Cyndi) Schnase, and Laurie (Henry) Rieniets; step-siblings, Tom Schmidtgal and Jeanne Hochstetler; numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved greatly; and his friend Lanee.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather Ted Schmidgtal; nephew, Eric Ziegler; and his beloved kitty, Olivia.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project.
