My Daddy

As a young boy, my Daddy would ride his bike with his friends from Staten Island to Harlem

My Daddy met my Mom at Empire roller rink in Crown Heights Brooklyn, fell in love and spent the next 75 years together

Daddy and Mommy raised four kids (Jacinta, Myron, Nita and Corey) starting in Manhattan and then in Queens where he became an urban gardener before urban gardening was a thing

My Daddy had a great New York accent - there is no "h" in three

My Daddy did not wait to be drafted but volunteered to serve in the Navy during the Korean war along with two friends from his Staten Island neighborhood.  They were immediately separated after enlisting.

My Daddy is the one who would pick you up from the airport even if you were not in town to visit him (and even give you a gift for your trip)

My Daddy is the one who would listen and pick me up when I needed help.   Even when I called to pick me up early from the horror movie I had no business going to see when I was twelve - The Exorcist

My Daddy built model houses out of toothpicks just for fun

My Daddy taught many people how to ride a bike and drive a car

My Daddy never met a road trip he did not like. With fried chicken wrapped in foil (for those that know) he drove us to see much of the US and parts of Canada

My Daddy could fix any mechanical thing he spent any time with

My Daddy had an amazing workshop basement and always had something to fix when I was in the basement with my friends.  He kept watch.

My Daddy decorated everything. Houses, shirts, hats, cars, desks. My Daddy was sick but still decorated their place for Christmas this year

My Daddy never stopped while he was here

My Daddy was stronger than the Cancer that infected him. My Daddy was trying to exercise the very day he died. Long after cancer is gone the things my Daddy did will be felt

My Daddy was a good man

Like I told you as you were leaving Daddy, you fixed all you could here, now you can rest

I love you Daddy

I'm so sorry for the loss of your father Dave. I'll always think of him whenever I am outside with my flowers.  He had such a generous spirit.  We had a layoverin New york.  He and uncle Dee came meet us at airport with flowers from his garden.   Such a kind jubilantman.  Will be missed in the flesh but his spirit is a lasting one.] DIANNA ANDREW'S WIFE
Rest in Power Uncle David! I'll always remember how kindly you treated me as a child and your signature voice. Praying for strength and peace for you all🙏🏿 🫶🏿

— with Uncle David, Aunt Gladys, Fabiola and Linda

Our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family.

I am Uncle David’s Niece, my Mom, Fabiola, is his beloved Wife’s Sister.

As mentioned previously, what I remember most is that Uncle David was always so hospitable and kind … even when simply talking on the phone for a few minutes, so I can definitely see all the beautiful traits Corey mentioned about his dad.

While we were there in Atlanta, earlier this year, we were able to look through so many boxes of pictures of different family members (big boxes of pics).  I’m thinking we should be able to find just about any pic of any family member in Uncle David’s time with Aunt Gladys.  I already told Corey that I have dibs on the pictures if he ever needs someone to keep them (lol).

Glad we were able to see him and Aunt Gladys, other family in Atlanta during our last visit back in April this year. 💕💕💕

I will always remember Uncle David for His kindness and hospitality… He will be forever loved and remembered…. I am so glad myself and my Mom were able to visit them in April, earlier this year.
It was my pleasure to reunite with Cousin David, after years of no contact. The last time was at a reunion in Detroit.  Before he left us, he was still cooking for himself and Aunt Mary. It was a joy to see him so active.

You’ve been my favorite Uncle forever.  And you always will be!  I thank God for having you in my life!

We’re going to miss you Unk!

Rest in the arms of our Savior. Mr. Overton taught me how to drive and each time I am behind the wheel I can hear him say " you have to drive for yourself and everyone around you." He taught a timid 18 year old girl how to parallel park a white station wagon and I am proud to say I can still parallel park any beast of a car because of him. He had a fatherly way of speaking to you even if he was not your father. He was the first good man I ever met. I spoke to him last after COVID,  and he offered me a kind word. He will be missed.

My deepest sympathy to Aunt Glayds and family .  May the loving memories of you love one bring peace in this difficult.  I always enjoyed talking to him before he handed the phone to Aunt Glady.

I am the daughter of Helen George, Aunt Glady's sister.

From: Your Louisiana Family!! Deepest condolences!! Sending Love and Prayers!!

Sending peace and blessings for Cousin David's entire family.  He was the most friendly and kind person always willing to help somebody in need. Over the decades he and Mary always supported my parents Claude and Dorothy at various events and functions, birthday parties, dinner banquets, luncheons, weddings and funerals they were always there. I have been blessed to spend time with him this year and learn more about our family. A significant loss has occurred.  PRAYERS PEACE LOVE.
The man, the stocking cap, the toothpick, to his infamous line of asking us if we've been " keeping our noses clean".  The many lottery tickets above his car visor. To him having every tool made in his garage.  He liked his things kept in a certain order, and he would definitely pop in on us, to make sure that we weren't disturbing that order.  He wasn't the loudest parent on the block or the meanest.  But we all knew that he loved and protected his property (by the sign on the back door stating, BEWARE OF OWNER,nevermind the dog" lol. If he felt that you had good intentions,  he'd open his home for you to enjoy the things he had. It was my pleasure to take part of many hrs in the Overton home over the yrs. To be accepted as apart of their family, and to witness great leadership up close and personal.  Job well done Mr. O sleep in peace.
