David's obituary
In Loving Memory of David Carr
August 12, 1932 – August 10, 2025
David Carr was born on August 12, 1932, in Los Angeles, California, to Natalie and Edward Carr, proud Irish-American parents. One of eight children, David was raised in a devout Catholic household, where his faith took root early and remained a guiding force throughout his life.
At just 14 years old, David made the profound decision to pursue the priesthood, leaving home to study at the seminary. A devoted and intense student, he immersed himself in theological studies for several years before discerning a different path for his life. He returned home to work alongside his father in the lighting industry, where he discovered his true passion.
David’s love for lighting was more than a profession, it was a calling. He had a gift for both design and sales, thriving in the art of crafting beautiful fixtures and sharing them with the world. Among his proudest achievements was supplying lighting to Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland, installations that still shine today. Over the years, David co-founded several lighting businesses, including a memorable venture with his brother Tom Carr.
Never one to stop learning, David took courses at USC and remained intellectually curious throughout his life. He was a man of many interests: an avid traveler, a lover of fine coffee, good food, and the simple joy of grocery shopping. He cherished time spent ocean fishing, camping at Lake Tahoe, following the Dodgers and engaging in political discussions.
David shared 62 years of marriage with his wife Barbara, and together they traveled extensively, creating treasured memories in Italy, Martha’s Vineyard, Napa Valley, and on numerous cruises. His creativity, warmth, and curiosity made him a beloved companion and an inspiring father and grandfather.
Faith continued to be a cornerstone of David’s life. In his later years, he was a daily churchgoer and found deep peace attending mass at the San Juan Capistrano Mission.
David is survived by his loving wife Barbara, their four children: Karen Lonsway (Tom), Tom Carr (Michelle), David Carr (Jenni), and Jim Carr (Maya) and ten cherished grandchildren. His legacy of love, faith, and creativity lives on through them.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Saturday, September 6 at 12:30 p.m. at St. Kilian Catholic Church, 26872 Estanciero Dr, Mission Viejo, CA 92691.
