David's obituary

It is with peace and sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. David Morrison McCormick, born on July 15, 1939, who left this world on March 30, 2025. We rest in the assurance he is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and that one day, we will be reunited.

Pastor Dave, as he was known, answered God's call on his life, serving 20 years with the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Mission in Hong Kong. He left the mission field to become the first Director of the Arizona Campus of Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary, eventually transferring to the main campus in Marin County, CA, as the Senior Professor in the Pastoral Care and Counseling department.   Known as the "Gentle Giant" at 6'5" tall, his love of basketball provided many opportunities to share God's gospel message as an international referee in Hong Kong and throughout Southeast Asia.

A kind, compassionate, and loving man, his tender spirit touched the lives of countless individuals throughout his remarkable life. Pastor Dave was a man whose character was defined by his unwavering love for both Jesus and humanity. He was a living embodiment of the compassion and kindness that he preached, and it was this love that fueled and inspired his service. He believed profoundly in the transformative power of faith and love, both of which he shared generously with those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Dave considered his greatest achievement to be his impact on the lives of others.  For over two decades, he served as a missionary in Hong Kong, bringing love, hope, and understanding to countless individuals through his dedicated service.  He viewed his mission as that of a practical theologian, training his students to minister to the needs of others through real-world application of classroom teachings.

His legacy is a testament to a remarkable life, marked by kindness, a nurturing spirit, and his unwavering dedication to his faith. His gentle and loving influence will forever be woven into the lives of those he touched, offering them solace and guidance in times of need.

David is survived by his loving wife Deana McCormick; their son Michael McCormick (Tracy) and daughter Trina Lathrop (Kevin); his sister, Barbara Fuchs (Jack).  David was adored by his grandchildren; James McCormick (Kennedy), David Lathrop, Jonathan Lathrop (Courtney), Jessica Lathrop Froysland (Connor), Lucas McCormick, Robert McCormick, Joe Haas (Celeste), Samantha Brown (Jason), Megan Haas, and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  He was a beacon of love and kindness to his family, and his presence in their lives will be keenly missed but never forgotten.

In his passing, we are reminded of the lessons he imparted to us - cherish your loved ones, strive to serve others, and foster a deep relationship with Jesus Christ. His life continues to inspire us, and, even in his absence, his example and spirit carries us forward.
