David's obituary

Obituary for Rev. David A. Matheny

Rev. David A. Matheny, 77, of Grove Hill, AL, entered his heavenly home on August 11, 2025, after a short and unexpected illness. Born on January 16, 1948, David lived a life marked by faith, service, and a deep love for people.

A devoted minister and accomplished college administrator as Vice President of Resource & Development at Central Bible College, David dedicated his career to pastoral ministry as well as training and equipping the next generation of Christian leaders. His unwavering commitment to the Gospel and his gift for encouragement touched countless lives—both as an administrator and in the pulpit. David pastored or served on staff at churches in Miami, Tampa, Bonita Springs, Williston & Gainesville, Florida, as well as in Sequim, Auburn and Spanaway, Washington. He also served as both the assistant director and then the director of youth ministries in Peninsular Florida from 1971 until 1982.

Beyond his formal ministry, David’s passion for sharing God’s Word extended to the written page. He was a frequent guest contributor for various Christian periodicals and devotional publications, offering wisdom, inspiration, and biblical insight to readers around the world.

David’s zest for life and learning was evident in his many interests. He was a licensed pilot who found joy and freedom in the skies. He loved exploring history through books and conversations, traveling to new places, and seeing the beauty of God’s creation. His heart for people was his greatest hallmark—he listened, encouraged, and cared with genuine compassion.

Above all, David cherished his role as a family man. He was a proud and loving husband to Patricia Matheny, father to Michelle and Jonathan and father-in-love to Steve, grandfather to seven grandchildren and their spouses, and great-grandfather to seven beautiful “great-grands,” creating memories that will be treasured for generations to come.

He leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and service that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

A celebration of David’s life will be held on August 16 at Magnolia Assembly of God in Grove Hill, with additional Celebration of Life services in Lakeland, FL and Spanaway, WA in the coming future. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Convoy of Hope, continuing David’s lifelong mission of spreading God’s love and compassion.
