Dave's obituary

During the summer of 2021 a beloved son, dad, grandpa, brother, and friend, David Wayne Maggard, suffered from diabetes and overcame other battles in his life, but passed away while resting in his home. Dave is preceded in death by his siblings Craig and Lynn and beloved step-dad Bill. He is survived by his parents Linda and Carl, his children Kaylee and David, and grandchild Riley. He was also a dad and grandpa to his non biological offspring Ian, Adam, Colleen, Elizabeth, Emily, Isabella, Ivan, Lily, Aurora, and Aria. He was the genuine Santa Claus for many children bringing them joy and wonder, especially as they could see and test his real Santa beard. As the holiday season approached Dave would grow out his beard and dye it white for the children, while making sure to eat Little Debbie’s sweets when waking during the night to have a belly (maybe during some months after the holidays too). This belly was no small feat as he battled with and overcame reverse anorexia. Those that knew him understood he was in the Y working out everyday for years while helping others with their routines as they sought his expert advice. Dave also worked for the YMCA for over twenty years as the facility property manager and oversaw many projects and construction while maintaining the needs of the buildings. Dave was the definition of a ‘Jack of All Trades’. He had the skills to fix or build anything. The washer needs fixed, done; the car won’t work, fixed; the electric needs rewiring, check; the hay needs to be baled, cows fed and barn stacked; the house needs to be expanded, addition added. We don’t know a task Dave wasn’t capable of doing. Dave had an excellent shot and you knew he would get his deer quota each year with a clean kill shot. Then he would skin, clean, prepare, and season some of the best deer jerky you ever tasted. He was excellent at grilling and seasoning food. Dave would also be kind in his comments when eating food that could use improvement. Dave was known for his nicknames he gave to others; like Zig, Zig Meister, Shorty, Stink, Lucy, Junior. Dave fought his own demons, as we all do, but when he wasn’t struggling he could bring so much joy and laughter to those that knew him. Life is full of moments and we significantly feel the loss of future moments, but we greatly cherish and treasure the moments we had.
There’s a service on Tuesday, September 14, at 1:00 p.m. at Machpelah Cemetery in Mt Sterling. Brother Steve McGuire will be officiating the service while Nathan Mann will be playing the bagpipes. The bagpipes playing Amazing Grace was the one thing Dave wanted at his funeral while also honoring his Scottish heritage.
