David's obituary

David Lopez was born in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Aurelio and Luisa Lopez in 1953. His parents migrated with his family from Puerto Rico in the 1950s. For nearly five decades, he dedicated himself to social justice and activism in Los Sures, New York City, and Puerto Rico.

Roots in Williamsburg

David’s journey began in Williamsburg, where he joined local marches and demonstrations at 14. He was inspired by the activism of the Young Lords, a Puerto Rican activist group that fought for proper health care, education, and housing conditions. He obtained his associate's degree at NY Technical College and his Bachelor of Arts at the College of New Rochelle, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Los Sures

David was an early member of Los Sures (South Side Untied HDFC), an organization formed to fight against housing injustices. David served as chairman of the committee for over 30 years. Today, the organization preserves and manages affordable housing units in Williamsburg.

NYC Human Rights Commission

David served over twenty-five years as a Human Rights Specialist. During which he played a key role in diffusing racial tension during the Crown Heights riots of 1991, and a police shooting in Washington Heights in 1992.

Broadway Triangle

Even after retiring, David continued to mentor young activists and engaged in numerous community activities and campaigns, including the Broadway Triangle fight against discrimination fight for equal housing. Once the Broadway Triangle is complete, the project will convert 31 acres of land located in Williamsburg, Bushwick, and Bedford-Stuyvesant into 100% affordable housing.

A Life of Passion and Commitment

David was not just a poet and activist; he was a true champion of human and housing rights. His unwavering dedication to our community made him beloved by so many. David’s strength lay in his profound love for humanity, always working tirelessly to uplift others. His legacy is one of inspiration and a relentless call to service.

David is survived by his beloved partner Anita, his son David Emeterio, his daughter Cassandra, his grandchildren Jamel, Antonique, Marcayla, and his great-grandson Ahli and the rest of his family.
