It was said over and over again in the memorial service how Pastor David was always there for those who were in need. This was never more true for our family (the Burkard family) than the time we were in a head-on collision just down the street from our home in Tokyo. Christine ended up in traction in a dingy hospital while Tom had to deal with the trauma of taking care of four kids ages 7 years old to 2 months old at home. Exactly one week after the accident, Pastor David and Marilyn along with Pastor Moses Vegh and Betty flew to a different part of Japan for a conference. As soon as they landed (after who knows how many hours on a plane) and without even going to their hotel, they all four got on a train. They were probably on 2 or 3 different trains and it took about 3 or 4 hours to get to the hospital where Christine was. The four of them, along with all of our family, crowded into the tiny hospital room. Pastor David later told us he thought the hospital looked like a World War II hospital! They loved on us, prayed for us, and brought gifts for the kids as well as monetary gifts and messages from the Shiloh family. As is par for the course with Pastor David, there was also much laughter. Our 2 month old daughter had not yet been dedicated, so we had a dedication prayer right there. An hour later, they all got back on the train to go 3 or 4 hours back to the conference they had come for. It was the most surprising and humbling experience for us knowing what they had to sacrifice to come to us. But it was also the most amazing experience for us, a never-to-be-forgotten expression of the love of God.

I am saddened at the loss of this spiritual father, giant of the faith, genuinely funny, servant leader. Pastor David used his humor and wit as anesthesia, injecting them into his sermons at those moments when you couldn't say "amen", but you could say "oh me!"
Pastor David will be forever remembered and missed until we meet again.
