David's obituary

David Allen Paul Joseph was born August 19, 1953 to the late Batiste and Victoria Joseph. After a short illness, David transitioned this life on Sunday January 9, 2022.

David grew up in The Bronx where he attended P.S.107, P.S. 100 and Jr. High School 125. He went on to attend the illustrious all male Dewitt Clinton High School where he played football. He maintained a close friendship with his football teammates. They continued to attend games more than 50 years after they graduated and got together for park reunions and boat outings. David was proud to call his fellow teammates - Ronnie, Ted, Gary, Brooks, Caines and Willie - his friends.

After graduation from Dewitt Clinton, David attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. David graduated from Morehouse in 1974 with a B.A. degree in English. David was a proud Morehouse graduate who returned to Atlanta regularly to attend Homecoming and visit with old friends, including Byrd, Shanck, and Stevie. After graduation, David returned to The Bronx to raise his son, Rodney.

In 1985, David started work with the New York City Department of Human Services. During his 32 year career at the Department, David was promoted multiple times and retired in March 2017 as a Senior Borough Supervisor of The Bronx Adult Protective Services Department.

Upon David’s retirement, he and Patty started on their travels around the world. At age 65, David took swimming lessons at the YMCA and became an avid swimmer. He went to the Y daily for his hour-long swims. David also became a competitive speed walker. While he competed with just himself, David loved those walks and his Facebook posts about his treks are legendary.

David was raised Catholic and was baptized in the Baptist Church as an adult. Although he was not a member of a brick-and-mortar church, he had a strong belief in God. David loved gospel music and played it every Sunday morning. During the Covid lock down, he became avid virtual viewer of Rev. Calvin Butts of Abyssinian Baptist Church.

David leaves to mourn his passing, his wife Patty Wynn Joseph; son Rodney Leathers (Landa); grandchildren, Sydney and Justin; siblings Carolyn Joseph, Juanita Joseph Greene and Michael Joseph (Shelia); stepchildren, Keith and Kara Thomas; sister-in-law Suzanne Ockleberry; brother-in-law David Wynn (Erin); nieces Jonelle, Regina, Jordan, Tyler, Kyah; nephews Joey, Mikey, James and Sean and cousins Florence, Darrell, Derick, Rene, Steve and Billy.

David also leaves behind a host of friends who will mourn his passing.

David wanted to give a special shout out to his Hospice nurse, Kevin Nyack

“When God takes you back, we’ll say Hallelujah, you’re home”
