Dave's obituary

David Henry Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the age of 75. Born on August 6, 1950, in Harvey, Illinois to Henry and Doris Johnson, Dave lived a life marked by service, family, and a deep love for the water and the open road. He graduated from Tinley Park High School as part of the Class of 1968, and just a few years later, answered the call to serve his country.

Dave proudly served in the United States Army from August 19, 1970, to March 23, 1972, as part of the Honest John Missile Unit, MGL-1. The Honest John system was the first nuclear-capable surface-to-surface missile deployed by the U.S. Army during the Cold War. Dave’s role in this powerful and strategic artillery system underscored his deep commitment to protecting his country during a tense and uncertain period in history. He carried the values of honor, loyalty, and resilience throughout his life.

After his military service, Dave returned to his hometown of Tinley Park and began a new chapter of service with the Tinley Park Fire Department, where he served with dedication and courage from 1975 to 1983. His time with the department left a lasting impact on the community and on those who served alongside him.

In 1985, Dave moved to Seminole, Florida, where he embraced the sunshine and a life enriched by his passions. He began volunteering with the local Fire Department where he also served as a board member for 3 years. Dave was a devoted sport fisherman, with a special passion for tarpon fishing. He often rose before dawn to chase the “silver king” through Florida’s coastal waters. Whether battling one of these powerful fish or swapping stories about the ones that got away, the water was his place of peace. Fishing brought him both adventure and serenity, and those lucky enough to join him on the boat will forever treasure those memories.

Dave was a man of deep and steady faith. He was a member of Indian Rocks Baptist Church for nearly two decades, where he found both community and purpose.  In 2014, he was baptized, marking a meaningful milestone in his spiritual journey.

Dave found great joy and brotherhood as a member of the American Legion Riders, blending a love for motorcycles with his unwavering support for fellow veterans. Riding wasn’t just a pastime for Dave—it was freedom. The roar of his bike on the open road was a sound that symbolized his spirit: bold, independent, and full of life.

Later in life, Dave faced frontotemporal lobe dementia with courage and grace. Though the disease brought many challenges, his spirit remained strong, and the love he gave to his family never wavered.

He is survived by his wife Allison Johnson, stepchildren Brock Mammen and Taylor Mammen, children Brian Johnson (Tina), Amber Leah Freeman (Derrick Deon), grandchildren Aundrea Johnson, Eden Johnson and Henry Johnson, great-grandson Amazi Johnson, sister Claire Rady (Daniel), and nephew Mark Rady, niece Kelly Musto (Jonathan) who will forever cherish his laughter, wisdom, and unconditional love.

He will be remembered for his strength, his service, and the way he lived life fully—whether in uniform, behind a fishing rod, or on the back of a motorcycle. He touched many lives and leaves behind a legacy of love, courage, and unwavering dedication.

A memorial service to honor Dave's life will be held on Saturday September 13th at Indian Rocks Baptist Church 12685 Ulmerton Rd Largo FL 33774 in the middle school youth center. Dave has chosen cremation. Visitation with the family will begin at 3 PM and the memorial service will start at 4 PM with refreshments to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Indian Rocks Baptist Church and American Legion Riders Post 273 in his memory.
