Dean's obituary
David “Dean” Hawks of Bountiful Utah returned to his Heavenly Father on his 83rd birthday, 9 December 2023.
He was born December 9, 1940, to David and Flossie Hawks in Idaho. He is the eldest of 6 children. “Dean” is preceded by his mother and father, David and Flossie Hawks, his brother Phil, and his son Ethiah. He is survived by his wife Patricia; Brothers Ellis and Rodney; Sisters Janette and Dianna; ten living children, Lennea, Aaron, Klin, Jair, Roxie, Allicia, Mosiah, Gennese, Shem, Shikara; 39 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He was a beloved father of 11 biological children, with many other honorary children needing love and comfort who filled his home throughout his years of Parenting.
Dean attended high school in Wendell, Idaho, and finished in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably.
After being discharged from the military, he served a full-time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served in the Germany South Mission. He later attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he met the love of his life. Dean was sealed to Patricia on August 31, 1967, in the Idaho Falls Temple for time and all eternity. He built houses, dove for abalone in California, and settled in Boise, Idaho, where he worked as a firefighter.
In August 1974, he purchased a farm in Marsing, Idaho, to pursue his love of agriculture, where he lived and raised most of his children until 1996.
After the sale of the farm, due to financial hardship, they moved several times until finally settling in Bountiful, Utah, in 2003, where he remained until his death.
Throughout his lifetime, Dean had an entrepreneurial spirit; he invented many handy items. Anytime you were stuck or faced with a difficult challenge and thought there was no possible solution, he would say, “Whenever you think it can’t be done, someone is already out there doing it - you just haven’t found the right way.”
“Dean” was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints throughout his life. He devoted many hours to his church, community, children, and anyone in need. He opened his home and dinner table to everyone. He devoted countless hours of service to the community and instilled in his children the importance of service and loving one another.
He often said he never had two cents to rub together, but he was wealthy with the blessings of the Lord. Hey may not have had money or fancy things, but his family never went hungry or without the necessities of life. He was very humble and never hesitated when there was a call for service - he would round up his family and friends and fill a need. He was the first to volunteer for any project. Dean emulated Christ-like service. He also served as a Scout Master for many years and was a founding member of a community troop. He earned his Wood badge as a member of the Buffalo Patrol. He helped many young scouts earn their Eagle. Dean loved the outdoors and was always out doing something, cutting wood, camping, hunting, fishing, bicycling, and hiking.
Dean loved everyone, including ward members and his neighbors. He was an example of service to others and lived and taught the gospel of Jesus Christ. He had five children who have served full-time LDS Missions: Aaron, Roxie, Allicia, Mosiah, and Shem. Dean will be missed and loved.
Viewings will be held Monday, 11 December, from 6-8 pm and Tuesday, 12 December, from 10-11 am, at the LDS Chapel at 550 N 750 East in Bountiful, Utah.
A funeral service will performed to celebrate Dean’s loving life on Tuesday, 12 December, at the LDS Chapel 550 N 750 East in Bountiful, Utah, at 11 am.
Interment will be on Friday, December 15th, at the Utah Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
