David's obituary

David Lewis Greenman of La Mesa, California went to be with the Lord on January 17, 2019. Dave was born on January 19, 1934 to Asa J. and Lucy Hoover Greenman. He was their fourth and last child. David was born on their farm near East Lansing , Michigan, and went to several one-room schoolhouses during his childhood. After graduating from high school, he went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Art with a minor in Science from Asbury College. While there, he met and married his beloved wife, Jessie. After graduating from Asbury, Dave and Jessie moved to Atlanta, Georgia where he attended seminary at Emory Divinity School and Jessie taught High School biology. Dave went on to receive a Masters and PhD in Physiology from Purdue University.

While at Purdue, Dave and Jessie had their favorite older daughter, Karen. After graduation, they moved to Tennessee where Dave did postdoctoral work at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. From there, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland where Dave taught and did research at Johns Hopkins University and Jessie worked alongside him in the lab. Shortly after moving to Baltimore, they had their favorite younger daughter, Marti. Dave went on to work for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Food and Drug Administration in Washington D.C., and retired from the National Center for Toxicological Research in Pine Bluff, Arkansas in 1994 in order to become more involved in Christian ministry.

Dave was an active member of Park Hill Baptist Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a deacon, was involved in the missions program, discipleship training, taught Sunday School, and became the State Coordinator for the Arkansas Baptist Prayer Ministry. The time he spent with the Lord in prayer and Bible study overflowed and was evidenced by the fruit of the sprit in his life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather with a wonderful sense of humor, and an endless sense of wonder and creativity. He lived and loved well and was dearly loved and admired by his family and friends.

Dave will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Jessie, his children, Karen (Mike) Duffin, and Marti (Scott) Steckbauer, his four grandchildren, Lauren (Ange) Amani, Ryan, Keagan, and Colin Duffin, his great-grandchild, Brielle Amani, and his sisters, Donnas Francis and Janice (Forrest) Van Valin. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucy and Asa Greenman, his brother, Bruce (Helen) Greenman, and brother-in-law, John Francis.

A memorial service is scheduled for February 12, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Bethany United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas where Dave and Jessie attended during their time in Austin. Donations may be made to Bethany’s KAIROS Prison Ministry.
