Dave at the age of 29. Dave has been gone one year today. It’s still very hard for me but I have so many good memories. It's true what they say that it just takes time, and you cant rush it. A few months ago I also posted a notice for Dave on Legacy through the East Bay Times at https://www.legacy.com/obitua…. You can also click on the link to view the online memorial for Dave by Lasting Memories from the Legacy page too. There are photos there too. πŸ˜ŒπŸ’—

I couldn't contain myself to just one playlist of music Dave had and liked and some reminding me of times in our lives so you'll have to indulge me! πŸŽΈπŸŽΌπŸ˜‰

WARNING!!: Some songs and live comedy may not be PC in this day and age! πŸ€πŸ™ƒ
And if it says "Explicit", like for a lot of the comedy routines, IT IS!! 🀣

For a few I couldn't get on Amazon Music the exact one so for "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" I found a fun substitute. And for Dave and Lauren's Father Daughter wedding dance I couldn't get Adam Levine's "The Way You Look Tonight" so I have Frank Sinatra's version which is really close! And I couldn't get the version of "Shout" performed (lip synched) by Otis Day and the Knights from "Animal House" so I have Lloyd Williams' version (voice in the movie) and the original Isley Brothers version. And I couldn't get Pete Wingfield's "Eighteen With a Bullet" (Dave has the LP) so I used a UK Top of the Poppers cover version. By the way this song title isn't what it sounds like, it's record company chart slang for a song that's moving up the charts fast- a hit song!

This undertaking was a true labor of love for me. It kept me busy and it took my mind off of the pain of losing Dave. πŸ˜”πŸ’•

Amazon Login is needed to access the playlists I think. And I believe some songs may not be accessible without Prime.
Enjoy!

Questions Posed to me by Ever Loved about Dave

This website, Everloved.com, emailed me one Dave question a week for four weeks. I thought it was a nice way to help trigger memories of our life together, and I'll share some now.

1. What did you learn from David?

Dave taught me how to drive a manual transmission, but I quickly fell out of practice after Dave helped me buy my first car in 1975, a 1970 Datsun 510 2 door with an automatic transmission! We got it from Pete Schuyler Motors, a Hawkins family friend, on Mission Blvd. in Hayward. He showed me how to reconcile the checkbook.
He also taught me how to use a power drill and screw driver, how to fix sprinkler heads and how to use all of his stereo equipment. And, WAY early on in the 70's, he taught me how to use his answering machine and microwave oven, and in the very early 80's he taught me how to use his computer and software and huge printer. He had all of these things before I knew of anyone having them. 🀩

2. How did you first meet David?

The complete story is in Dave's Obituary, but we met when he came over to my house to fix a wall that I drove into in the garage and into the stairwell going downstairs. The goal was to get the wall fixed before my parents came home from vacation! Many thanks to my brother's former wife Roberta, who was a friend of Dave's sister Bonnie, who hooked us up! And we were at Skyline High School in Oakland at the same time for the school year 1969/1970, he in 12th grade and me in 10th grade but our paths never crossed. And I saw him just fleetingly when he came in and out of his parents' house in 1972 while my sister Barbara and I were there for our bridesmaid dress fittings that Dave's mom was sewing for my brother Steve's and Roberta's wedding. πŸ₯°

3. What was the most fun you ever had with David?

In 1975 Dave took me to Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe for my 21st birthday and we saw Paul Revere & the Raiders! So cool! And at the roulette wheel in the casino we rubbed shoulders with Gregory Peck who was with his daughter, we think, but who knows!! So much fun!
In 1976 we drove down to southern California for vacation and one of the places we visited was Universal Studios. While waiting in line for an attraction we were given free tickets to a "new game show" called "Family Feud". We thought sure we'll go. I remember vividly announcer Gene Wood telling jokes and warming up the audience. And host Richard Dawson was a crack up! They taped two shows. We had never done anything like this before and we thought it was fun but I recall us telling each other "yeah, I don't think this show is going to make it". HaHa!
On our 1991 Mexican cruise one of the stops was Mazatlan so of course we went to Senor Frog's. We and our group of friends had a blast dancing on the tables and all. In fact we were having so much, ahem!, fun that we barely made it back to the ship before it departed for Ixtapa!
Dave did an absolutely fantastic bang up job at keeping my 40th Birthday Party at Full House Chinese Restaurant a surprise! I told him I really didn't feel like going out to dinner and besides my hair was dirty. Somehow he talked me into it. When we pulled up to the restaurant I said oh that looks like so and so's car (can't remember whose) and I still didn't catch on when I saw another familiar car. It wasn't until I entered and saw my friends and family that I realized what was happening! That was so awesome and sweet of Dave, and a testament to his good planning skills!
In June 1992 when we went to Disney World in Florida Dave was recovering from his broken feet. By then he had a "walking cast" on his right leg which he could take on and off with Velcro. And he had crutches too - which I think (?!) we brought with us. Coincidentally a neighbor and friend of the girls, Mike, was going to be there at the same time with his mom and grandma. I'll never forget how when we entered the park Disney World staff came running up to us and said "Sir, sir, can we bring you a wheelchair?" Dave said "sure". They were soo accommodating. We actually didn't even think of getting a wheelchair because Dave was doing OK and wasn't complaining. But boy that was fantastic! By now we had met up with Mike and his family so ALL 7 of us got to go to the head of the line for rides! What a great day! FYI, I think they've cut back on allowing entire entourages joining in at the head of the line with this type of situation now, I've seen!
Really, Dave made everything we did fun, like going to the KFOG KaBoom Sky Concerts in SF, and Oakland A's games, and Medieval Times, and New York and Hawaii and Yosemite, or hanging out at home. He was always playful and kind of goofy, which, in retrospect may have made it more difficult to tell if something was wrong with him, but we loved him for it. πŸ’•πŸ˜š

4. What act of kindness did you witness from David?

In 1989 Dave offered to donate his generator to victims of the Loma Prieta earthquake through the Red Cross.
Dave was very friendly and talkative to anyone who would listen, like on airplanes or waiting in line.
Dave was trusting and saw the good in people and gave them the benefit of the doubt, much more than me who is more suspicious and wary.
If friends and family needed work Dave would hire them if he could and if he had a job going on.
Dave was generous with his knowledge and skills. He happily helped out his family, friends and neighbors with their construction projects. πŸ˜ŠπŸ’—

More Memories and Reflections of Dave from Carol

Dave lost his wedding ring on our honeymoon when we were swimming in a lake in Mendocino County! It was a simple curved wide 14k gold band and was engraved. We replaced it, but realized that Dave really couldn't wear a ring because of the construction work he did always using his hands. It would just get messed up or get lost again! So at first he would wear it when we would go out but then it began to get too tight so we put it away in his drawer. I really don't remember when he wore it last but that's OK, I didn't mind. πŸ₯°πŸ’•

For a few years both Kristin and Lauren were Girl Scouts at the same time and they were in different troops. I volunteered to be the Cookie Mom for one of their troops, then thought what the heck, I may as well be the Cookie Mom for both troops since I'm already doing it, and I was overdue in stepping up to help out. This was a job that entailed having all the troops' cookies stored at your house and the scouts came to you to pick up what they had pre-ordered for their friends, family and customers. Well with each troop member ordering about 5 cases on average, and both troops had about 12 to 15 members, I had up to 150 cases of cookies stacked in the garage, the same garage where Dave had a lot of his tools and building materials! He did not look happy when he saw his garage packed with cookies and couldn't access what he needed for his jobs. I apologized and told him I didn't think it through enough about how it would impact him. Although annoyed at first, he soon was regaling and joking with the moms and dads who came by with their daughters to pick up their cookies. Truly in his element! πŸ˜‰πŸ’πŸͺ

One week before we got married Dave and I went to the beach in Santa Cruz and I got soo sunburned which I'm prone to do. Dave did too but not as bad as me. I recall my late dad not being pleased with us kids, which we really were, just 21 and 22, and bemoaning the fact that "you'll be peeling like an onion in the wedding photos!" My dad, a retired naval officer, did a fabulous job arranging for us the use of Treasure Island, then the U.S. Naval Station Treasure Island, for our wedding venue; the Treasure Island Chapel and the Fleet Admiral Nimitz Club's Casa de la Vista room for the reception with its beautiful views of San Francisco. It was a special place that not too many of our guests had been to or had access to, and he wanted everything to go smoothly. Thankfully he needn't have worried about our sunburns. It almost looked as if I went to a spa and got a fancy facial because my face was smooth and clear! Whew! And Dave looked just fine and cute as always! πŸ’–πŸ˜š

When Lauren visited me a couple of weeks ago we sat in the family room to watch Hamilton on Disney + because the internet connection is better out there. She told me how she remembers being out there with Daddy and Kristin making things with Omagles which are like the Pipeworks building toys. I'm not sure who instigated it, it could have been any one of the 3 of them, but they dropping everything and went to Walmart to buy Michael Jackson's "Bad" which came out that day in 1987. I told her "Where was I? I don't remember any of that." Lauren answered "Somebody had to play with usπŸ˜„." And I said ah, yeah, haha. And that was the girls' dad to a tee. He played with them more than I did really, while I was doing chores or something. So cute and fun!
