David's obituary
David George Anderson, longtime resident of Heritage Palms in Indio, California, passed away on July 24, 2023 at the age of 77. After a valiant three-year battle with cancer, he took his final breath peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Mary Pat; his children Julie O’Brien and husband Michael, Brian Anderson and wife Veronica, and Theresa Anderson and partner David Dykstra; and grandsons Grayson, Lincoln, Justice and Archer O’Brien.
David was born in Newton, Massachusetts and served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. He returned home and received his bachelor’s degree from Western New England College. He married his beloved wife, Mary Pat DuBois, in 1973 and the following year welcomed the first of their three children. In 1990 he accepted a job at San Diego State University and moved the family to California. In 2000 he retired with Mary Pat to Indio, California where he fulfilled his lifelong dream of living on a golf course.
David was a truly happy person who brought great joy to all the people in his life. He had an amazing sense of humor which he kept to his final days. He was devoted to his family and made sure to keep them laughing during the most difficult times. He was an avid New England sports fan, but more than anything he was a passionate golfer known for his lightning-fast backswing and a lifelong desire to “shoot his age”. He spent his retirement on a golf course and played more golf than any other resident of Heritage Palms in 2020. It was here that he finally accomplished the hole-in-one that had eluded him most of his life. He was a pillar of the golf community and was affectionately nicknamed “911” by his peers due to his medical issues, but he never let them stop him from doing what he loved most. He made amazing friends and memories in his community and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, he asked that his friends play a round of golf in his memory. The family will host a golf tournament in his honor at his home course of Heritage Palms on January 15, 2024. All will be welcomed and encouraged to join regardless of skill level. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heritage Palms Employee Scholarship Fund in David’s name so that he may continue to give back to the community he loved so much.
