David's obituary

Well, he did it, folks. The unimaginable thing; the thing that conceptually everyone knew would happen one day yet still barely believed possible – on June 19th, 2023, David Edward Foley left the building surrounded by loved ones. And he did it in true Dave Foley style: with a bang.

Born June 7th, 1950 in Musselburgh, Scotland, he was the second of six children. Eventually emigrating to Canada in the 1960’s, the family initially settled in Amherstburg, Ontario where a young David got a job working for the Coast Guard. This was to be the beginnings of a lifelong dedication to helping others.

Dave had a mixed bag of careers, becoming proficient in just about everything he picked up- from building houses, to fashion design, to restaurant ownership, but nothing lit his passion quite like helping people. His drive to be a champion for the underdog was unwavering and was a thread woven through his life since he was a child.

Always up to something, and often getting himself into trouble, Dave was a creative and complicated man, but no one could deny his zest for life or his ability to charm a room. His tales, even if resembling the fish variety, were unparalleled and will be greatly missed by anyone fortunate enough to have heard them.

Predeceased by his parents, Mary and Alexander Foley, sister Kathryn, brother Brian, best friend Fran, and little buddy Kirby; he is survived by his children, Christian, Adrienne, and Justin, little buddy Daisy, grandsons Elwood and Daewon, adopted granddaughter Katie; his sister Maureen, brothers Alan and Martin, brother-in-law Raffaele, and many nieces and nephews.

We welcome those who’d like to join us in celebrating Dave’s storied life on November 12, 2023 at Sona Ristorante and Taverna in Leamington, Ontario from 12pm-3pm. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided and there will be a cash bar available for those who are interested.

Please do not send flowers; Dave was an avid proponent of supports for survivors of human trafficking (http://www.wefight.ca/) domestic violence survivors (https://hiatushouse.com/donat…) as well as supports for autism (https://www.autismontario.com…) and any donations to these causes would honour his memory. In addition, if anyone would like to read something, have something read on your behalf, or speak in general at the celebration, we encourage people to send us your stories or simply stand up and tell them at the celebration. He was, after all, a lover of legends.
