Growing up in St. Paul, Indiana, he graduated from North Decatur High School, Mike attended Purdue University before proudly enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served for 9 years, then served in the Air Force Reserves for 6 years. After his military service, Mike worked for National Semiconductor for 20 years, leaving a significant mark in his field.

Mike’s life was a testament to dedication, not only to his family but also to his community. He held leadership roles in numerous organizations, including Santa Clara County Open Space Authority, Bay Area Ridge Trail Council, Berryessa Citizens Advisory Council, Berryessa Business Association, Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation Volunteer Coordinating Committee, and the City of San José Parks and Recreation and Neighborhood Services Commission. He also worked closely with former San José City Councilmember Marjorie Matthews.

Mike was a man of many passions. He loved camping, hiking, biking, and enjoying the outdoors. His deep love for parks, public service, and the natural world shaped much of his life. Mike was also a fan of science fiction, often enjoying shows like Doctor Who, Ancient Aliens, Destination Unknown, Star Trek, and Star Wars.

Mike is survived by his devoted wife, April Flaugher; his daughters Tara Gardea, Brenna Johnson, and Gweneth Gomez; his sons-in-law Jesus Gomez and Kurt Heath; and his cherished grandchildren Marina, Calysta, Haylee, Ace, Noah, and Liam. He is also survived by his sister Maureen Flaugher.

Mike’s legacy of public service, family love, and dedication to his passions will be remembered by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a veterans’ fund in Mike’s honor.

Rest in peace, Mike. Your service to your country, your family, and your community will never be forgotten.
