Chris's obituary
David Christopher “Chris” Cook, 62, passed away on April 8, 2025, in Drummond Island, Michigan.
Born on April 16, 1962, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Chris was the beloved son of Clifton Cook and Bonnie Sandifer Johns. He grew up in Charlotte and graduated from Independence High School before attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A proud Tar Heel through and through, Chris’s devotion to his alma mater ran deep—his blood, as he often said, ran baby blue.
After leaving college, Chris answered a higher calling and joined the United States Navy. Over the course of a distinguished 24-year military career, he rose to the rank of Command Senior Chief. His service was marked by dedication, leadership, and an unwavering commitment to his country. Following his retirement from active duty, Chris continued to serve with honor as a civilian employee for the U.S. Government for another two decades.
Upon retiring fully from public service, Chris settled on Drummond Island in Michigan—a place that brought him peace and joy in his later years. There he embraced a quieter life while continuing to enjoy his favorite pastimes. An avid golfer with a competitive spirit that never waned, Chris also fondly remembered his younger days playing basketball. His love for sports was matched only by his love for family.
Chris shared 36 devoted years of marriage with his wife Becky. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter. He is survived by Becky and their three children: Amanda Pangle; Kristina Arbuckle and her husband; and Victoria Cook. He also leaves behind two cherished grandchildren who brought him immense pride and happiness.
In addition to his immediate family, Chris is survived by his mother Bonnie Sandifer Johns; brothers Anthony Johns and Bo Cook; and many others whose lives were touched by his presence. He was preceded in death by his father Clifton Cook and stepmother Dolly.
Chris’s legacy is one of service—to country, to family, and to all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who loved him and inspiration to those who follow in his footsteps.
