David's obituary

David Roduner Baer passed away peacefully at his home in Sonora, California, on November 12, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was 70 years old.

David was born in Syracuse, New York, to James and Beth Baer, and spent his childhood in Menlo Park, California. He attended Woodside High School and went on to study at UC Davis before making his home in Sonora, where he lived for 49 years.

A beloved father, “Papa,” husband, brother, teacher, and friend, David devoted his life to his family, his students, and his faith. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Pat; daughter Megan and son-in-law Michael; son Sam and partner Justin; brother Alan and sister-in-law Santa; sister Mary and brother-in-law Domenic; and his cherished grandchildren, Faye (5) and Ari (1).

For 42 years, David taught 4th grade—primarily at Soulsbyville Elementary School—where generations of students remember his kindness, patience, and gentle humor. He could always be counted on for a silly joke, a warm hug, or his infectious laugh.

David’s love for the outdoors was woven into every part of his life. He treasured time spent hiking and backpacking in the Emigrant Wilderness and Yosemite National Park, which he lovingly called his backyard. He also found great joy in exploring sections of the Pacific Crest Trail with his lifelong friend, Tom McGrady.

Deeply committed to his community, David poured his energy into small acts of service that made a big difference—recycling, patching potholes, delivering firewood to neighbors in need—and cheering on his beloved San Francisco Giants and 49ers.

David leaves behind a legacy of generosity, curiosity, and wholehearted living. His family and all who loved him will carry his stories, adventurous spirit, and selfless heart with them always.
