First, to David's family: My deepest condolences. I knew David when were both at Sonoma State University. I invited him to lecture in my classes. He was great and a treasure. We also had private conversations about social change--and I found him warm and supportive. Thank you, David!
I’m so sorry to hear of David’s passing. He and Patti were constant figures in my jazz fest/WWOZ volunteering experiences. I delighted in comparing notes each year of what we’d eaten/heard and strategizing how to cram in all our must-see sets. We often ended up at the same performances. It was a joy to quickly communicate with a nod or passing expression of awe how we were just witnesses to something fantastically special. David’s enthusiasm for life, music, and New Orleans was infectious. My love goes out to Patti and the family.
Patti,
My deep condolences. I only met you and David briefly in New Orleans when I was there for the National Park Service at the Jazz Park. I remember when I first heard David's Jazz From the French Market and how it fully captured, excited, and pleased my imagination.

I talked to you both a couple times at the OZ hospitality tent. Reading David's bio what a truly extraordinary and exceptional life and life story, of course with you being an equal part of that equation. I wish I would have gotten to know Jelly Roll. He represents everything I wish I could have been. Everything!

I have been at Yosemite for 4 years now. I never had the opportunity to tell David I started my career mid life at Golden Gate NRA and the Presidio.

Very sorry for your loss and the community's loss!
I hope you see this.

All the best to you and yours.

Six months after Patti Rimpau…
1964, Berkeley, CA
Six months after Patti Rimpau met David and thought he was a jerk, the improbable pair got married on June 27, 1964. It was a small affair—there were only 26 guests. Some of Patti’s family weren’t sure about her choice of a rabble-rousing Jew who’d had polio and didn’t attend. The reception was held at the UC Berkeley Faculty Club, it was just weeks after they’d graduated. The proud groom picked up the cake from a bakery on the way.

David talks strategy with Cesar Chavez outside the United Farm Workers offices prior to a protest march. Looking on is Pete Velasco, who helped organize the first strike by farm workers in the Central Valley in 1965, which led to the five-year grape boycott. Velasco represented the mostly older Filipino farm workers, while Chavez initially represented the largely younger Latino farm workers. Bringing the two groups together was vital to the UFW’s success.

Young David with baseball great Luke Easter in about 1949. Easter was one of the first African American baseball players in Major League Baseball, playing for the San Diego Padre, the Cleveland Indians and other teams. He was renowned as one of the few players of his era who could hit a ball as far as Babe Ruth.
