He was visiting his daughter and family (Tictin's) in SF. He had no idea I was also meeting them there to deliver a settlement check. We agreed it would be fun to trick him. We conspired to surprise him at breakfast one morning. The place was the renowned Buena Vista Cafe (Irish coffee specialty). I arrived ahead of them and grabbed a seat at the bar with my back turned, pretending to be reading the Chronicle. When the group sat down at their table, they arranged for him and me to be back-to-back. Once he was seated, I started kicking his chair with my heel. After the third time, he said to his daughter "If that guy kicks my chair again, I'm gonna deck him". One last kick and he got up, grabbed me by the shoulder and spun me around. "Hello, Big Guy, what's up?" We laughed our asses off every time we re-lived that pimp.

I grew up with Dave in Grayslake and loved him and all the time we spent together. This “Armenian” will never forget the “ Jew” as we called each other, and I look forward to joining him in the hereafter where we will laugh together once more!

Mr. Berman was my sixth grade teacher at Roosevelt elementary in Mesa, AZ 47 years ago! I had never forgotten him, and I so wanted to reconnect with him all of these years later to thank him for all he had done for me that year. I had thought about this for many years. That was a very difficult year for me and he was my hero. I never really thought I’d find him!
I was working in an elementary school myself a few years ago as a preschool assistant, and I found out (after I had know her for 2 years or so?) that the mother of one of my students, her father was my Mr. Berman! This was the amazing Michelle, and Miles was in my class! She quickly set up a family get together, and I was blessed to be able to give him a huge hug and talk to him, and to finally tell him what he meant to me. He hadn’t forgotten me! I reminded him that he had told me to always keep my beautiful smile that 6th grade year, (the little girl with crooked teeth and no confidence) and that I had not only a teacher who had my back, but a friend. He always told me to be proud of myself, and that I was a winner no matter what happened in my life. I kept all of his sweet notes, and have looked at them many times over the years. I am so grateful that he was a part of my life, even so long ago, because that’s when I needed him the most. He was loved, and will be so missed.

Dear Berman family . . . Condolences to all of you on the passing of one of my oldest friends. He was a big part of the Class of 1964 of Grayslake Community High School and our reunions. I am so glad I was able to visit with Dave and Judi when in AZ in May 2014, as that led to you attending our 50 yr. Reunion the following August. R.I.P. Big Guy! You will be missed!! Hugs & love to all!

First, my deepest condolences to the entire Berman tribe. But what a great tribute to Big Guy - well written and so applicable! I always remember being welcomed by Big Guy’s huge smile and genuine interest in whatever was going on in my life at the time. He could have just had the worst day of his life and you would never have known it. Dave was such a nice man. I loved him and he is already missed!
