Darwin Glen Smith
May 15, 1939 – March 19, 2024
Known affectionately as "The Old Man" by close friends, hunting buddies, and family, Darwin passed peacefully at home.
Darwin was a self-starter who preferred working independently on remarkable projects. Alongside Eva, his wife, he built their home in Kelso from the ground up. He was adept at operating and maintaining various heavy equipment and enjoyed developing properties, in addition to helping neighbors and friends with theirs.
Darwin was a career welder at Longview Fibre Company, retiring after 33 years in 2000.
Darwin possessed a wide array of interests, including reading, piloting small aircraft, hunting, fishing, and most recently, sawing logs for his many projects.
Born in Osage, MN to Woodrow and May Smith, Darwin was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Darrell(Dec. Dawn daughter) Delbert, and Dwight (Dec.Donna and Scotty ((son))).
Darwin is survived by Eva, his wife of 62 years, his children: Linda Smith (Richard Lemert) of Eugene, OR; Laura Thurman (Brad) of Kelso; Duane Smith (Jaci) of Kelso; and Leah Melika (Morad) of Los Angeles, CA. Grandsons: Ryan Lemert-Smith, Corey, Garrett (Madison), and Conner Thurman, Vincent and Max Melika, and granddaughter Casey Melika (Stephen Sorg), great-grandson Rhett Thurman, extended family who regarded him as their grandfather and great-grandfather, his brother, Douglas Smith (Sandra) of Osage, MN, sisters-in-law Mildred Smith of Kelso, Purita Smith of Sparks, NV and numerous nieces and nephews.
Darwin Smith’s family invites relatives and friends to attend Darwin’s memorial service at the McClelland Art Center on May 19, 2024, at 1:00 PM.
