Darrin's obituary

Darrin Michael Thorpe

April 15, 1969 – February 15, 2025

With broken hearts, we share the untimely loss of Darrin Thorpe—a loving husband, devoted father, caring brother, and loyal friend. He left this world too soon, but he was surrounded by love, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, laughter, and unforgettable music.

Darrin’s love for music started young, and it became the heartbeat of his life. From his days at Schalmont High School, drumming in his band Chimera, to playing in drum corps with the Syracuse Brigadiers, New York Skyliners, and Capital Brass, his talent was undeniable. Music wasn’t just something he did—it was who he was. He even studied music education at the College of Saint Rose, always wanting to grow and share his passion.

Over the years, he played in various bands around the Albany area, and one of his proudest moments was when his mom came to see him perform. One of his greatest joys was playing in Prime Mover, a Rush tribute band, with his best friend, Jeffrey Wildermuth. After moving to Florida in 2019, he lived out another musical dream—starting an ‘80s band with Jeff and his wife, Ronnie. It was pure happiness for him, getting to play the songs he loved with the people he loved.

In 2009, Darrin found a second chance at happiness when he married his wife, June. Together, they blended their families with love, and this fresh start brought Darrin immense joy. He cherished every moment of the life they built together.

In recent years, Darrin discovered a new thrill—roller coasters. He was like a kid again, riding the best of the best at Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, and SeaWorld. Those adventures, filled with excitement and laughter, made for some of his best memories.

But beyond the music, roller coasters, and family, Darrin was simply an incredible person. He never needed the spotlight, but he lit up every room he walked into. He was a rock for so many—always there, always steady, always ready with a joke or a kind word. And, of course, he was never shy about sharing his opinions—especially when it came to why The Lord of the Rings was the greatest movie trilogy of all time (and don’t even try to suggest otherwise unless you wanted a very passionate debate). If Darrin thought something, you knew it. And more often than not, he was absolutely right.

Darrin leaves behind his loving wife, June; his sons, Jacob Thorpe and Kyle Thorpe; his stepchildren, Samantha Shoen (Tony) and Spencer Boras; and his siblings: sister Robyn (Victor) King, and brothers Donnie Thorpe (Lisa Gregg), and Doug Thorpe. And while we grieve his loss, we find comfort in knowing that his parents, Clifford and Charlotte (Gorman) Thorpe, were there to welcome him home.

Darrin had a very special place in his heart for his dog, Comet. More than just a pet, Comet was his constant companion, always by his side through life’s ups and downs. Whether they were lounging at home, heading out on daily car rides, swimming in the pool or just enjoying each other’s company, Comet brought Darrin endless joy and unconditional love.

Celebrations of Darrin's life will be held in both Florida and New York, where family and friends can come together to share stories and memories. Details to follow.

If we asked Darrin how he’d want to be remembered, he’d probably smile and say, "Just remember the music. Remember the fun. And maybe marathon all three extended editions of Lord of the Rings in my honor." He wouldn’t want sadness—he’d want laughter, a great playlist, and maybe even a drum solo or two.

Darrin’s warmth, humor, and rhythm will never fade.  He may not be here in body, but his love, his music, and his adventurous (and sometimes very opinionated) spirit will always live on in our hearts. 💙
