Darrell was the greatest. He was my landlord and sponsored our broomball team. The Flat Iron is probably the place I miss the most from my time in St Cloud. Probably ate there at least once a week. Darrell Burger w/ Chili, Cheese, Kraut, Fried Onions & Fries. Loved his responses on almost everything. Especially when we would tell him that we invited Kari to our parties at the Roadhouse when she was in High School. My best to his family.
Darrell was such a great guy!  True friend to many a CHS Class of 76, and our Flat Iron men’s team in Waite Park. He watched over us all,  kept us in line while letting us spread our wings. A great man with a wonderful legacy!  Godspeed Darrell!
What an awesome and kind-hearted man Darrell was. He was a "do-er"...the kind of guy that people gravitated to. We didn't know each other well but his personality was so magnetic that I felt like I was greeting my best friend every time I encountered him. RIP, burger thrower.
And... another trophy!

What a unique and wonderful individual.  He combined his love for sports and kids to provide many opportunities for the young people in our community.  Whether it was sponsoring a team through the Flat Iron or volunteering at an event, Darrell was always willing to help out.

I will never forget the image of Ginny and Darrell side by side in the kitchen of the Flat Iron cooking up the famous Darrellburger with greaseless fries.  All the while Darrell would be carrying on a conversation with the customers and taking good natured shots at those of us playing cribbage.

I last saw Darrell at the VA in early December.  As always, he deflected questions about his health away, but after about two hours, we had solved all the questions about the Twins and Vikings going forward.

Our condolences to the Peterson family and his friends. We lost a great one!

Every time I drive by the old Flat Iron building it brings back memories of me enjoying an infamous Darrellburger. They were absolutely fantastic! My sincere condolences to Darrell's family and friends.
Whenever you ran into Darrell, at the Flat or just walking down the street, you got a smile and a how ya doing. I had the honor of taking over as manager of his beloved women's softball team. He taught me many things about being a good coach. Be tough, but remember that it's just a game and by doing your best you were always a winner. He loved people and it showed. After our games we'd go to the Flat for a beer. The first thing he'd ask was, did you have fun? Then he'd ask if we won. Nothing pleased us more than when we could say we won tonight or here's the trophy we won at the tournament. Those memories of Darrell and those wonderful women have stayed with me all these years. So, here's to brother Darrell who's with us tonight.

I'm so sorry for the loss of Darrell.  He was such a strong supporter of young people & athletics for SCSU/community.  I got to know from the Flat Iron while attending SCSU & playing football there.

Ginny, Ken,  Kari and family

First off, my condolences for your loss. I first got to know Darrel at the Flat Iron shortly after you bought it. I remember my senior year at cathedral when the drinking age was 18. We thought it was cool to leave and go to the Flat Iron between classes for a burger and a beer.

Although you may disagree, for a guy that was within a couple of months of my parents in age he (and Ginny) seemed way cooler than them.  Both of you helped us navigate through the latter 70’s with advice, ass kicking, and fun.

Just tonight my wife and I were playing cribbage (one of many useful things I learned at the Flat Iron).  She had a hand that she wasn’t sure what to keep. When she mentioned it I asked her “what would Darrel say”, which of course is keep your points!

All of you were a big part of our growing up years.   Thank you and Darrel for being a part of it!!
