I was Mr. Grosz's student at Hale schools. He used to get me so mad, lol. But I will always say that he was the best band teacher I could've had. He was passionate and so knowledgeable and loved what he did. His students mattered and he always pushed us all to be the very best we could be. I am sure my older brother pushed him to his limits many times, but he was always so proud of us all and the program he led. He taught me so much and I have thought of him many times over the years.  So sad to hear he is gone. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.
I was his student at Whittemore-Prescott in Junior High and then at Hale High School in Senior High. Even when I lost part of a finger and had a Solo an Ensemble competition, he pushed me to be and do the best I could even with a giant bandage. He really strived to bring out the best of us not just in music, but in ourselves.
Very sad to hear of his passing.  He made me into a better musician than I ever dreamed I would be. Really enjoyed band day at U of M and watching him battle my mother Jean Bell at ping pong! And I shared his walleye fishing passion. So thankful to have had him in our school!
Linda and family;  our hearts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Many good memories from Hale. God bless you all. Libby and Barry Johnson

I was so sorry to hear about Darrell's passing. Prays to your family .He was the reason that I came to Gladwin school . He changed my life showing me that there are teachers that care about there students and there music. He was my favorite teacher im glad I was able to have him as my music teacher .

Linda, can you imagine the fishing trip Ken, Bob and Darrell are having up there. Sorry for your loss.

My prayers and deepest condolences to the Grosz family. Many, many of my high school memories have Mr. Grosz in them. What a wonderful man and a beautiful legacy. Grateful for his faith in the Lord and the confidence that he is doing really, really well right now in the presence of his Savior.

Will keep you all in prayer in the days ahead.

For the record, one of my Mr. Grosz sayings that I say way too much in adulthood is, "Early is on time, and on time is late."  Go Blue, Mr. Grosz.

Darrell certainly was an asset to our congregation while he was here at Christ the King. Music has seldom been the same since he moved to Florida.  I do have to say, it certainly is seldom that an obituary can elicit a chuckle - I can see that Darrell did a good job in choosing a woman who could write an obit that can walk that tight line, and write an obituary that matches the tenor of the person being memorialized.  I am sure the fishermen who harvested the offspring of the hundreds that got away are probably thankful he was limited to 14 or 15 in his Pratt Lake fishing career.  But most of us are just thankful for the music he brought to Gladwin.
My daughter Jennifer Marshall was one of Darrell's students in Gladwin, MI. He came to her wedding when she got married.  She respected him and always spoke highly of him. She is saddened to hear of his passing.
It was an absolute pleasure to know Darryl thoughout my career as a band director in Michigan.  Working with him on a few MSBOA committees, he always had wonderful insight and a terrific sense of humor.  He smiled all the time.  We will miss you old friend.
Dave and I are saddened by the news of uncle Darrell’s passing. Our deepest condolences to Aunt Linda.
