Darlene's obituary
Darlene Ida Spruth (née Kopeika), 82, of Oak Lawn, IL, was a creative spirit and an undeniable force beyond compare. At different times in our lives, we are fortunate to meet special people, whether for five minutes or, as in the case of her surviving husband, Harold, for over 65 years. For her son Eric, it was 59 years, for her granddaughter Iris Violette, 17 years, and for her grandson Drake Von, 16 years. Whether you encountered her for just five minutes or were blessed to share a lifetime with her, Darlene's impact was unforgettable.
Darlene passed away on October 2, 2024, with her devoted husband, Harold "Bud" Spruth, by her side. Born on August 12, 1942, in Chicago, IL, to Dr. Henry and Josephine Kopeika, Darlene's life was a rich tapestry of love, artistry, and resilience. She attended Mother McAuley High School and shortly thereafter met the love of her life, Harold, whom she married on October 21, 1959, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Special thanks to their best friend and best man, Ted Passantino, an unwavering family friend and supporter of their long-lasting relationship. Together, Darlene and Harold built a life filled with creativity, laughter, and unwavering support for one another, raising their son Eric along the way.
A true fighter, Darlene was known not only for her tenacity but also for her ability to transform spaces and lives. As a sought-after interior decorator, she had an eye for beauty and detail, and her knack for finding the best deals was legendary. In later years, alongside Harold, she ventured into selling pottery under the name Color Me Yesterday, showcasing American and European pottery.
Darlene was a master at balancing her many roles with grace. Whether she was working, traveling, or camping, she always found time to nurture and support her family. She was not only a devoted wife and mother but also a talented painter and poet, capturing the world through her art and words with a unique and heartfelt perspective.
One such poem, a true family treasure:
Drift thoughts
I'm drifting, forever drifting
my mind, memory all of me
drifting to you again
our past alive to drift longingly
when we first were to the other
a gift!
Darlene's strength, love, and creativity will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her memory will live on through the family she cherished.
