I will miss my Uncle Danny whom I named my son after. Uncle Dan always knew how to cheer me up. Dan and Kay exhibited such marital love and devotion, an example to all in a day and age when divorce is rampant. I’m praying for Kay and his beloved family members; grief is deep and ne’er easy. He will be missed, and yet now we have even more to look forward to when we go to Heaven. His smile! I love you, Uncle Dan!
My condolences to Kay and daughters and their families. Dan was a fellow clinical laboratory educator and professional I knew professionally and shared his love for photography. Dan is missed by his fellow professionals. May he rest in peace.

Dear Family,

I was one of the many students that graduated from Dan Southern's BSMT program at WCU. He was the best and expected the best from all of us. I have had a career at Duke University Medical Center since graduating from WCU in 1986. I will always be so grateful for the influence of Dan, and his teaching, both in and out of the classroom. He taught us to take what we learned in the classroom and apply it in the laboratory or wherever we found ourselves in life. I'm very sorry to hear of his passing and I know he will be greatly missed but his legacy lives on.

With sincere condolences, heartfelt thoughts, and prayers,

Dawn Jones Marshall

Dan was a wonderful friend to my father, Dr. Jim Stringfield, in his later years.  My father loved to garden and when he became too old to work his garden anymore, Dan tended it for several years.  He also did some yard work for my parents, trimming bushes, etc, when they could no longer do that themselves.  He did all this on his own without any compensation but always with an upbeat positive energy.  Dan was a wonderful man who actively lived his faith.  My condolences to his family.

We were so very sorry to hear of Danny's passing.  I remember our high school years, of course, that was a lifetime ago.  Plese know our thoughts and prayers go out to Kay and her family.  It sounds like Danny led a full and gratifying life and you and family share wonderful memories. May God's comfort abound during this difficult time.
Dear Kay and family,  Our sympathy, thoughts, and prayers. As your family comes together, we hope the shared memories will ease the pain of your lose a little
Such a wonderful man! Paul and I are glad to have known him. Love and prayers for God’s comfort as y’all find you way through this difficult time.

Mrs. Southern,

Your family is in our thoughts and prayers.  My heart aches for you.  I am sorry for your loss.

Love,

Jennifer, Allen and Lilly Shelley

So many fun stories come to mind when I think of Dan! He was more than a professor to his students, he was also our friend especially after graduation. Once I reconnected with him through Facebook, he was curious about unusual things we saw in the lab especially during covid. When I was a student back in the late 90’s, I didn’t understand his enthusiasm about our field but I do now. RIP Dan  The lab lost a great mind and a great man!!
