Daniel's obituary

Daniel (Danny) Greene was born in Brooklyn, New York to Richard and Verne Greene on May 27, 1949. He graduated from Fordham University in 1972. During his time as a student at Fordham University, he traveled to eastern Kentucky to assist with the construction of the first Catholic Church in Floyd County, KY. Upon graduation, Danny returned to the mountains of Kentucky to help provide educational opportunities to disadvantaged youth and adults. In 1974, he along with two other individuals founded The David School in an abandoned coal town company store. The school was staffed by volunteers who dedicated one or more years to teach academic and vocational skills to the youth and adults in the area. In 1985, Ann joined him as a volunteer to coordinate the Adult Education and Literacy program. In 1986, they married and subsequently had five children; Alanna, Luke, Jimmy, Colin, and Juliann. Danny was a modest individual who was committed to serving the students. Most are unaware that he was named the “57th Point of Light” by President George Bush for his work. Upon his acceptance of the prestigious Jefferson Award in 1994 by the Institute for Public Service, Danny had the opportunity to speak about the need for educational opportunities for at-risk youth at the U.S. Supreme Court. Additionally, in 1995 Danny received an Honorary Doctor of Education from St. Ambrose University. Danny and Ann continued to serve in the rural mountains of eastern Kentucky until 2005 when they moved to San Antonio, Texas. Danny continued his passion for education by teaching in the Social Studies department at Madison High School. However, Danny always felt the most important thing in his life was his family. He was always there for his children. He never missed Alanna’s dance recitals or Nutcracker performances. He was Luke and Jimmy’s soccer coach taking their teams to silver medal status at the Bluegrass State Games. A former Eagle Scout himself, he saw the importance in scouting and was an assistant scout master in Boy Scout Troop 515, and so proud to watch Jimmy and Colin become Eagle Scouts. Then as the younger children became involved in Churchill Marching Band, Danny became an active parent volunteer and chaperone. This opportunity enabled him to travel with Juliann, Colin and Ann to New York to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Danny was a terrific father, husband, and friend. His warmth and storytelling could always captivate a room. His impact is boundless, and we will forever miss his presence here on Earth.

The Greene's have appreciated all of the support from friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the Greene's also welcome donations to the Port Ministries (http://www.theportministries.…) It is a small Franciscan inspired non-profit Luke serves for on the south side of Chicago that Danny was really proud of.
