Daniel's obituary
Daniel Caleb Dixon, age 41, of Gladstone, Oregon passed away on Friday October 27th from complications of kidney disease. He was a determined man of many talents. He lived life with his heart wide open and his early passing will leave an aching hole in many hearts. His wife Edie, his parents, siblings and many close friends were able to be with him in his last hours.
Daniel was born to Russell and Sherry Dixon on July 31st 1982, in Portland, Oregon. Daniel was soon joined by a parade of 4 younger siblings (Matthew, Michael, Ariel and David) and they became the Dixon 7. Like every child of the 80’s, Dan grew up riding bikes, making forts and playing down by the river. Daniel was strong-willed, joyful and adventurous. Always looking to make others laugh, Daniel could often be caught making plans for some elaborate prank. The yearly backyard barbecue for Dan’s birthday was always filled with dozens of cousins, friends, aunts, uncles, grandparents and neighbors.
When Dan was 13 years old, the Dixon 7 moved off the grid, to the forest near the Oregon Coast for 2 years. During this time Dan enjoyed some crazy adventures and working with his hands. After moving back to civilization, Daniel attended Gladstone High School. Daniel’s thriving social life required most of his energy in high school but he also excelled in art class and on the Gladiator Football team. In his free time, Daniel enjoyed photography and snowboarding; or devouring half a batch of cookies while playing video games. Daniel’s friends often complained about his uncanny ability to ace a test after sleeping through class. Daniel graduated from Gladstone High School in 2001.
After graduation, Daniel attended massage school, and continued to pursue woodworking and art, while often working in construction. In 2008, he took an opportunity to travel to Mexico with several other Dixon guys, to build homes for those in need. Daniel married Edie in 2015 in a backyard ceremony with family and friends. From that day on, they were inseparable. Daniel was often diving into a new hobby, usually related to fitness or requiring advanced DIY skills. Fixed gear bikes, body building and gardening were some of his favorites in the last few years. Dan loved to spend an afternoon discussing how to challenge the powers-that-be while trying out a new coffee shop, or drinking a beer while tending to his garden. Last year, for his 40th, Daniel had an all-out birthday barbecue, one we will always remember. Daniel never stopped living life to its fullest, sharing genuine joy with everyone who had the honor of being his friend.
Daniel is survived by his wife Edie, his parents Russell Dixon and Sherry Peddicord, his siblings Matthew Dixon, Michael Dixon, Ariel (Dixon) Petitmermet and David Dixon, each of their spouses, his eight nieces and nephews and his paternal grandmother Helen Dixon. He also leaves behind many loving in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Daniel is preceded in death by his older brother Jeremiah Dixon, maternal grandparents Wilma and Earl Dean Ferguson and his paternal grandfather Fay Dixon.
Daniel’s memorial will be held at Oregon City Church of the Nazarene, on Sunday, December 10th at 2pm.
