Craig's obituary

Craig Bradberg Williamson, 60, of Denver, passed away on October 5, 2021 from a cardiac event. Craig was born on July 20, 1961 in St. Paul, Minnesota to John Alexander Williamson and Valerie Beard Williamson. Craig grew up with two sisters, Anne and Dawn, and his brother Bruce. Craig spent his 6th grade year with his family in England where a love of football (American soccer) began. He graduated from Boulder High School in 1979 and went on to study theatre and mathematics at The University of Colorado Boulder. He graduated with a B.A. in Theatre and a B.A. in Math in 1983. In 1990 he met Marlene Kay Brenton at a square dance that they had both attended, and on May 25, 1991 the two were married in Boulder, Colorado. Craig and Marlene welcomed their first two children on October 22, 1994 when twins Phillip Brenton Williamson and Duncan Bruce Williamson were born. While helping to care for twin newborn babies, Craig was managing his career as well as earning a Master’s of Science in Applied Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Colorado Denver. His degree was granted in 1998, and the following year Charlotte Dorothy Williamson was born on April 11, 1999.

Craig began his career in Load Research at Public Service of Colorado where he was in charge of their Load Research Department. After many years at Public Service of Colorado, he would leave to work in the telecommunications industry only to return to his first love – Load Research. Craig would say that while he worked for many companies (Primen, Enernoc, AEG, etc.), he really only had one job, that of a Load Researcher. Craig was loved by all his clients and was truly a great teammate and brilliant man. Throughout his career, Craig has played major roles promoting the Western States Load Research Alliance and the Association of Edison Illuminating Companies Load Research & Analytics Committee. Craig has been a cornerstone of the AEIC Load Research & Analytics workshop series as a long-time faculty member of the Fundamentals course, and was the conduit through which many in the utility industry learned Statistical Sampling and Analysis concepts. Craig reworked the AEIC Intermediate course into the Statistical Methods Course where he was one of the lead instructors. He was a frequent contributor to the AEIC Advanced Applications in Load Research & Analytics workshop. Craig wrote and presented countless papers on a wide array of topics in the industry. He was in his glory teaching and sharing his knowledge with new generations of Load Researchers. At the time of his passing, Craig was a Senior Principal Consultant at DNV-GL.

Craig had many interests including his love of soccer, theatre, baseball, trains, and NPR among others too numerous to list. Craig started each morning with a meticulously made cup of black tea, often Yorkshire Gold or Scottish Breakfast. He enjoyed attending Colorado Rockies games as a season ticket holder for over 15 years, as well as Colorado Rapids games, something that he and Marlene did regularly together. Craig was also a dedicated supporter to the Arsenal Football Club, visiting Emirates Stadium in London on more than one occasion to support the Gunners.

Craig was committed to the Colorado theatre community throughout his life. In his younger years he worked in lighting and set design for local theatre companies including shows at The Aurora Fox, Miners Alley Playhouse, and the Colorado Shakespeare Festival. He became a theatre critic for the North Denver Tribune when he accompanied a good friend to a show to help her with a review. After hearing his ideas, she told him he should be the one doing the reviews. Craig was deeply and profoundly dedicated to local theatre particularly. Although he loved seeing larger productions and national touring shows at the Denver Center for Performing Arts, he always reviewed local theatres with enough shows remaining on their schedule so that his review would help them fill their seats. Craig wrote for the Tribune for over 14 years. He also served as a judge for the Colorado Theatre Guild’s Henry Awards, attending an incredible number of shows each year while in that role. All of Craig’s children benefited from the “plus one” tickets he received as a critic which allowed them to spend time enjoying theatre with their father.

Craig and his family were members of Jefferson Unitarian Church, and both Craig and Marlene were heavily involved in the church community. He served in various roles, most recently as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was passionate about the UU 9th Grade Trip, having attended when he was a ninth grader, tenth grader, and for a handful of years as a Responsible Adult and even driving the Big Blue Bus.

Craig is survived by his three children: Phillip Williamson of Lynchburg, VA; Duncan Williamson and wife Vanessa Williamson of Fargo, ND; and Charlotte Williamson of Denver, CO. Craig was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years Marlene Kay Williamson who passed away on October 3, 2019 after battling brain cancer. Also preceding Craig in death was his brother Bruce Williamson, parents John and Valerie Williamson, and nephew Mark Callanan. Craig is also survived by his two sisters: Anne Williamson Callanan and husband Terry Callanan of Fairport, NY; and Dawn Williamson and husband Jonathan Wheeling of Dundee, OR, as well as nephew Ryan Callanan and his wife Leah Meadows of Washington, D.C.

A Memorial Service for Craig will be held on December 11, 2021 at 4:00pm at Jefferson Unitarian Church in Golden, CO. You can find more information about the memorial service, share memories, and make donations in his honor at everloved.com/life-of/craig-w….
