Cory's obituary
Cory Maxson: Team Spirit Beyond the Field
Cory Maxson, a Marine veteran and former high school football coach, passed away after a long battle with kidney failure in the J.A. Wedum Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, on September 28, 2022. At the age of 83, he left behind a legacy of love and commitment to his family, friends, and community.
From the Bleachers to the Battlefield
Cory was born on July 10, 1939 to his late mother and father, Rose and Troy Maxson. His lifelong love for sports and personal growth began in a small town in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the age of six, Cory's interest in sports began when his father taught him baseball. Although he enjoyed playing the sport, he was more interested in football as evident by the skills that later developed in his life.
In 1956, during his senior year at Schenley High School, Cory's dedication to football earned him a scholarship offered by a college football recruiter. Upon receiving the news, Cory made the hard decision to quit his job as an A&P stock clerk. Based on the attempt to balance work and school, his decision clearly showed his loyalty to his team and the hopes to reach his goal of making the college football team. In fact, his diligence on the field earned him the admiration and respect of his team. However, his father later declined the offer. At the time of dealing with racial discrimination and not being able to become a pro athlete himself, Troy feared the same fate would happen to Cory. Despite this, a new opportunity awaited Cory.
Shortly after graduating, Cory went on to join the Marine Corps. As advised by Lyons, his half-brother, Cory served in the Marines for 30 years. He was deployed to many countries around the world and even fought in the Vietnam War and the 1982 Lebanon War. He retired early as a master sergeant.
A Kickoff to His Legacy
During his time in the Marines, Cory met Loretta Wright while visiting his family in his hometown. In 1967, the couple got married and moved to Brooklyn Park, Minnesota where they raised a daughter and a son together: Tammy Maxson Collins and Cory Maxson Jr. Cory's love for sports, along with his fun personality, provided an outlet for his children to take an interest in them as well. As a devoted fan and skilled player, he was always eager to share his knowledge and passion with others. After retiring from the Marines, Cory went on to become a football coach at Washburn Senior High School. He was known by the students there as a kind mentor who makes their games worthwhile and helps others show their potential to college football recruiters. Cory's enthusiasm and love for football extended beyond the field as he was often seen watching football on TV with his friends and family.
Cory Maxson was a protective, caring, and attentive man who always put the well-being of his loved ones first. His hopeful outlook on life encouraged those around him to face each day with optimism, and his support provided resilience and faith for his friends and family. Cory will be deeply missed, but his legacy of hard work, passion, and love will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
