Ihr voran gingen ihre Eltern Sigrid und Albrecht Magnus und ihre beiden Schwestern Beate und Sabine. Geboren wurde Cornelia Mergenthaler 1939 in Tokyo, wo ihr Vater als Correspondent for Nachrichten für Aussenhandel und Eildienst GmbH arbeitete und wohin er nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als Diplomat der jungen Bundesrepublik zurückkehrte.
