One night in 1958 my Dad (Norman Gaines Sr.) brought over to our apartment at 1728 North 6th Street Bud Ulen with his sons Lance and Tony; Dr. Wesley Johnson with his son Wesley; Dr. Nelson Brooks with his son Nelson Carter Brooks III; and Walter Hooper with his son Walter Hooper. I knew and was friends with all of these men to this day. Sadly, I have lived through the passage of Nelson, Lance and Tony (Clive Anthony). I don't know if his remaining family knew of me, but I regularly stayed at the house on Cumberland St. during the late 60s/early 70s, and I knew and was friends with his mother and grandmother. A great family.
I was a part of Tony's life from our first meeting in 1958 (along with his brother Lance) through his early legal career - but closest during our shared time at Edison Junior High School and John Harris High School. I also enjoyed the atmosphere at their family home on Cumberland Street. "CA" as I called him, was always interesting to be around, and his exit from this existence taxes all who knew him.
