Clifford's obituary

It is with deep love and sorrow that we remember our father and husband, Clifford Bowen Call, born to Velan David Call and Myrl Allred Call, on December 7, 1934, in Colonia Juárez, Chihuahua, Mexico. He left this earth peacefully on November 3, 2024, a month shy of his 90th birthday. He was surrounded by all of his children and their spouses and his beloved wife of 64 years, Valerie Mary Hippman Call. He is survived by his brother, Robert Call, his wife, Mary, and his five children and their spouses—Derek and Tina Call, Grant and Joanna Call, Linda and Larkin Parrack, Gerald and Tanya Call, Alicia and Matthew Peterson, his 24 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Velan and Myrl, his sister MyrVee Porter, and his brother Velan Call.

Cliff spent his years in service to others. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a three-year mission in Mexico in 1954-57. After his mission, he served 3 years in the U.S. Army in Germany and 6 years in the Army Reserves. While in Germany, he went on leave to London, where he met his wife in church. He served in many callings, including bishop, scout master, stake executive secretary and nursery leader where hundreds of children called him Grandpa Call and he loved them all. He served four missions with his wife, two in the Family History Center, one in the Guatemala Temple and one in the Guadalajara Mission as mission secretary.

He was a Spanish professor at Thunderbird Graduate School in Glendale, AZ for 27 years. As part of that, he directed a summer exchange program in Guadalajara Mexico for 15 years, taking his whole family with him each summer. When he got home from teaching, he would change into work clothes and get to work pouring concrete, building with wood, taking care of the yard, keeping bees and a myriad of other projects, unknowingly whistling and biting his tongue while he worked. He also had a special whistle to get his kids' attention and to call them home.

Cliff loved the Lord and loved to serve in the temple. He was an ordinance worker for many years in both the Mesa and Phoenix temples. When he wasn’t an ordinance worker, he was a dedicated patron, often going five days a week.

He was beloved by all and will be missed terribly.

His funeral will be held on November 30th at 10:30 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 22034 N 83rd Ave, Peoria AZ. The viewing will be held at the same location starting at 9am.

The interment and graveside ceremony will be held December 3rd at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona at 2929 E. Pinnacle Peak Rd, Phoenix AZ at 1:30pm.
