Claire's obituary

Claire Clements was born in Bronxville, New York. Her father was Alexander Brown and mother was Yvette Bloom and she had a sister, Sandra North.

As a child, Claire went to a Westchester County Art Center every Saturday morning, riding the train and picking up other class members along the way. In high school, Claire was a cheerleader. She was admitted to Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg and studied art and art education. She dated her husband Bob throughout her undergraduate years.

Bob married Claire at her parents’ home shortly after graduation. She applied to Pennsylvania State University's Master of Arts program and two years later to Penn State’s doctoral program. She taught 7th and 8th-grade art.

Claire earned a doctorate in art education. After Bob finished his doctoral studies, they went to Ball State in Muncie, Indiana to teach. Bob and Claire adopted their two children, Cal and Megan, at their birth. They spent a year in Washington, DC, where Bob had a government scholarship, and then they moved to Athens, GA.

Claire had vast experience teaching art. She taught in government art programs at senior centers. She was hired at the University Affiliated Facility to teach art and later headed up a ceramics program in the prisons. Later, she gave training sessions to staff of institutions throughout Georgia and worked with graduate students at the University of Georgia.

Claire retired as Associate Professor and started the Athens Plein Air Painters which she headed for 35 years. Claire also exhibited her artwork and paintings for many years at the Oconee Cultural Arts Center, Georgia Museum of Art, Athica, Georgia State Botanical Gardens, and Lyndon House. In 2024 she held a two-person collage art exhibition at the Lyndon House Art Center. Claire’s vast creativity is displayed in the four bus stops she designed for Athens-Clark County.
