Chris's obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the passing of Christopher John Fair on October 15, 2023, following a lengthy battle with cancer and surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, warm-hearted son, brother-in-law and uncle, and a friend to many.

Born on December 4, 1973 at Concord Hospital in Concord, NH, Chris was the son of Robert C. Fair and Lynne T. (Cusumano) Fair. Raised in Concord and educated in local schools, Chris graduated from Concord High School with the Class of 1992. He met Starr Smith in 1996, and they were married in June of 1998. They settled in the area to raise their children, eventually moving to Boscawen. Chris is survived by his wife Starr Smith Fair of Boscawen, his son Peter Smith of San Diego, California, and his daughter Margaret Grace Fair of Boscawen. He is also survived by loving (in-law) parents, Starr M. and Peter F. Smith of Loudon, aunt Elizabeth A. Matray of Mt. Laurel, NJ, sister- and brother-in-law Jacqueline K. Smith Truesdale and Joseph “Jay” R. Truesdale, IV of Loudon, and his nieces, Ella, Augusta, and Alden and his nephew Charlie. He is also survived by his uncle, Christopher Cusumano of Huntington, NY, and other cousins and numerous friends who became family over the years. Chris was predeceased by his parents.

Known for his loyalty, generosity, good humor, and the occasional bit of devilish mischief, Chris’s greatest love was for his family. He spent many hours in the role of Cub Scout leader, working with Peter on badges, Pinewood Derby cars, and camp activities at Camp Carpenter. He was also a “theatre dad,” often backstage or in the audience in support of Margaret, and later, they spent a lot of time over the engine of a Jeep or parts of a Mustang, tinkering and bringing old vehicles back. He could often be found working outside, taking a drive or building theatre sets with Starr, as they had recently begun adjusting to life with no kids at home. In addition, Chris enjoyed many outdoor hobbies with family and friends. Camping, waterfowl hunting, ATV riding and barrel-racing all occupied many of his hours, and he developed many wonderful relationships during those events. He liked to play at games and sports, but he was always gentle and patient. He loved animals of all kinds.

When he wasn’t spending time with family or engaged in his hobbies, Chris could be found at work. Chris was a skilled glazier, most recently employed as an Area Manager for Portland Glass. He enjoyed the technical aspects of the job, from creating one-of-a-kind showers to large-scale curtain walls, but he truly enjoyed and cared about the group of people that he worked with daily. The family thanks Chris’s work family for their unwavering support of him during these difficult months.

A celebration of Chris’s life will be held at a later date. The event will begin with a short memorial service, followed by a BBQ, as Chris loved time at the grill with family and friends. Attendees will have the opportunity to share stories and memories of Chris during this time.

In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made in memory of Chris to Dana Farber and Dr. Alok K. Tewari's testicular cancer research. Chris knew how important it was to support this research.
