Chris's obituary

Christopher Wesley Dougherty (“Doc”), aged 45, of Oreland, PA passed away unexpectedly doing the job that he loved on December 20, 2023.

Chris was born on May 28, 1978 to Rodger and Linda (Vernon) Dougherty. He attended all of the Springfield Township schools, graduating from Springfield Township High School in 1996. He played baseball and football throughout his childhood and remained a fan of Springfield to this day. His favorite games to attend were when Springfield played Upper Dublin.

He graduated from Kutztown University in 2001 with a degree in Telecommunications. He then joined the band Spacestation Integration and moved to North Carolina to live the band life. In 2003, he started his photographic journalism career with the news helicopter, Chopper 10. A year later he moved to Chopper 6, where he remained for almost 20 years. He loved his career and telling people about the stories he covered.

In 2004, he met his wife Elaine at Brownies 23 East in Ardmore; another story he loved to tell. They married in 2007 and welcomed their daughters, Kiera and Dilan, in the years to come. Nothing gave him more joy than raising his family in Oreland.

Chris was an avid sports fan, specifically football, and all Philly sports teams. His ability to recall stats and specific games was remarkable. He absolutely loved watching his girls play sports.

Music was a huge part of Chris’ life. He was a self-taught percussionist and guitarist. He wrote his own songs and enjoyed performing at local open mic shows. If he wasn’t playing music, he was listening to music. He had a wide range of musical interests ranging from jam bands, specifically Phish, to country. Chris loved finding new music to listen to and loved sharing music with others.

Above all else, Chris was a devoted husband and father. He loved coaching and supporting Kiera with her various sports. He also cherished his time singing and playing guitar with Dilan.

Chris is survived by his wife of 16 years, Elaine (nee O’Malley), his daughters Kiera and Dilan, his father Rodger Dougherty, brothers David (Carly), Jeffrey (Kristin) and Jonathan. Mother-in-law, Elaine O’Malley, brother-in-law Charles O’Malley (Amanda) and nieces and nephews Nathan, Ellie, and River Dougherty and Claire and Maia O’Malley. He will be greatly missed by extended family, neighbors and friends. He will be especially missed by his childhood friends, David Allegretti, Daniel Eisele, Daniel Shmukler, Ryan Thurston, and Brandon Wilson, as well as their families. He is predeceased by his mother, Linda Vernon Dougherty, and his father-in-law, Charles A. O’Malley.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with the family Thursday morning, December 28, 2023, from 9:30am-11:15am at St Luke the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church 2316 Fairhill Ave., Glenside, PA 19038. Funeral mass to follow at 11:30am. Burial to take place privately on a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated to support the future education and care of Kiera and Dilan Dougherty.
