Ching's obituary
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ching Cheng Wei on December 29, 2023. Born in 1938, Ching lived a life full of accomplishment and impact, devoted to his family, his vocation, and his community.
Ching will always be remembered as a loving husband to Man-Hui Wei, whom he married in 1968. They built a strong and supportive family together which includes their two children, Angela Derner and Jeffrey Wei, their son-in-law Scott Derner, and daughter-in-law, Rowena Wei. His joy was deepened by the arrival of four beloved grandchildren; Justin Wei, Audrey Derner, Brandon Wei, and Owen Derner. He was survived by his brother, Wei Kwang Ming, and two sisters, Shou-Ming Chen and Heidi Chen. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
Ching graduated from Provincial Hsinchu High School in 1956. He furthered his education by earning a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 1960, followed by a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1967. He held positions at Union Carbide, Kimberly Clark, as well as Clorox, ultimately as a senior research engineer, from where he retired in 2000.
Ching was a devout attendee, deacon and elder of the Taiwanese Community Church in Lombard, IL. He enjoyed singing in the church choir including his favorite hymns, Amazing Grace and The Best Friend Is Jesus.
Ching enjoyed simple pleasures such as reading, gardening, and taking care of his home. He had an extensive workshop and tool collection, and was known to be an accomplished handyman. He enjoyed photography and jogging in his younger years. He continued to be an avid tennis and table tennis player well past his retirement.
Described as warm-hearted, diligent, caring, and industrious by those who knew him, Ching truly lived out these qualities in his daily life.
Ching's departure leaves an irreplaceable void in our lives. As we mourn his passing, we find comfort in the love and kindness he shared with us all. While we miss him, we also celebrate his well-lived life, cherishing all that he taught us about love, faith, hard work, and family.
We are planning a celebration of life for Ching in Lombard, IL at his Taiwanese Community Church on March 23, 2024. We will share further details as soon as they become available.
In lieu of flowers, feel free to contribute to a charity of your choosing on behalf of Ching.
