Peter's obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Chief Peter Bello, fondly known as “Oga Peter” — a man of remarkable character, unwavering spirit, and boundless kindness. Born on October 3, 1937, he lived a fulfilling 87 years before his peaceful transition on April 17, 2025. His life was marked by humility, compassion, and an unshakable commitment to the well-being of others.

Chief Peter was born to hardworking parents — a migrant miner father and a trading mother. Very early in life, he understood the challenges of his family’s limited resources. After completing Elementary 4, he left school to support his mother in trading, helping to provide for his siblings.

With foresight and consideration for his family’s financial situation, he chose to learn a trade that required minimal capital — radiator repair. He mastered the craft quickly and, upon completing his apprenticeship, established his own practice. His honesty and reliability soon earned him a loyal clientele. Ever resourceful, he began buying damaged radiators, repairing them, and reselling them, which further boosted his business.

His keen eye for opportunity led him into the transport business, purchasing a new car to operate as a taxi. When he acquired an accidented vehicle for spare parts, he discovered yet another business path: selling auto parts to others in need. This venture flourished, and he became a well-known auto spare parts dealer in Jos and its environs. He later expanded into vehicle recovery services, operated tippers, and invested in real estate, building houses and shops for rent.

A noble community man, Chief Bello found joy in helping others. His support extended to business mentoring, training apprentices, empowering individuals, and even building homes for the elderly without family or shelter.

Despite humble beginnings, he demonstrated the power of perseverance, industriousness, and dignity of labour. His patience, business acumen, and unshakable values made him a pillar in the community. His life motto, “The Lord is good to all; and no time is late,” captures his optimism and faith.

Chief Bello’s legacy — built on hard work, integrity, and deep love for family — continues to inspire. He was a devoted father, proud grandfather, loving great-grandfather, and a man with a delightful sense of humour, especially when surrounded by his family.

Daddy got married to his wife, Felicia Nwaugo Okoro-Okah whom he fondly called "Osogbo" in 1966 and the union was blessed with seven children.  In 1980, he entered into a second marriage relationship with Josephine Imuesi, this union was blessed with five children. He was later separated from his second wife. However, the family remained as one big family under Daddy's firm guidance and discipline.

He is survived by his children: Mrs. Samira Hussaini Abdulkarim, Richard Bello, Mrs. Faith Gyang, Mrs. Edith Lagi, Kenneth Bello, Mrs. Miriam Iyawe, Emmanuel Bello, Judith Bello, Maureen Bello, Mrs. Dorcas Adeh, and George Bello.
