Having been blessed to be neighbors for 18 years, we will truly miss Cherie’s sweet smile and pleasant greetings. We always enjoyed our lakeside chats and her wise advice. We appreciate the kindness she gave to us, our children, grandchildren, and even our “grand doggies”.

It was a joy to come home from work in the summer and see Cherie on the lakeside, feeding the ducks and swans. She had names for them all and would give us lessons on the different species. They too would flock to her, they knew her kindness.

Just like the graceful swans gliding across our lake, find comfort in the grace and memories Cherie bestowed on all that knew her. With heartfelt sympathy and blessings,

Steve & Vivian Brachmann and Family

David,

Jeff and I are so very sad to hear of the passing of your sweet Chérie. We loved being your neighbor and Cherie was always so kind to our grandchildren when they would visit. We loved sharing feeding times of the black swans and geese with Chérie too. She had such a gentle spirit and I’m so thankful to have known her .  Our prayers are with you and your family during this very difficult time. Love, Jeff & April Wallace.

A poem contributed by Katie's dear friends with whom she served in the Peace Corps in Ukraine - Bernadine and Ken Clark.

Everything is Waiting for You

Your great mistake is to act the drama

as if you were alone. As if life

were a progressive and cunning crime

with no witness to the tiny hidden

transgressions. To feel abandoned is to deny

the intimacy of your surroundings. Surely,

even you, at times, have felt the grand array;

the swelling presence, and the chorus, crowding

out your solo voice. You must note

the way the soap dish enables you,

or the window latch grants you freedom.

Alertness is the hidden discipline of familiarity.

The stairs are your mentor of things

to come, the doors have always been there

to frighten you and invite you,

and the tiny speaker in the phone

is your dream-ladder to divinity.

Put down the weight of your aloneness and ease into the

conversation. The kettle is singing

even as it pours you a drink, the cooking pots

have left their arrogant aloofness and

seen the good in you at last. All the birds

and creatures of the world are unutterably

themselves. Everything is waiting for you

By David Whyte

A favorite poem of Katie's (with a moving recitation featured in the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,

Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,

Silence the pianos and with muffled drum

Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

Scribbling on the sky the message [She] Is Dead,

Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,

Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

[She] was my North, my South, my East and West,

My working week and my Sunday rest,

My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;

I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;

Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;

Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;

For nothing now can ever come to any good.
