Charlotte's obituary

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven; … Ecclesiastes 3

“A TIME TO BE BORN…”

Ms. Charlotte Nelson was born on July 23, 1948, in Brandon, Mississippi to the late Rev. Alfred and Mrs. Violet Nelson. She was the fifth of nine children. Two brothers (Alfred, Jr. and Timothy) preceded her in death. She attended elementary and high school at Holtzclaw School in Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Charlotte then attended Jackson State University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Dramatic Arts (1970); a Master of Arts degree in Reading Education (1977) and a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision (1979).

“A TIME TO LOVE…”

Charlotte was the mother of a beautiful daughter, Chantel Nyldevethe Nelson. The bond of love that they had for each other was evident and witnessed by many.

“A TIME TO GATHER STONES TOGETHER…”

Charlotte was a supportive mother, sister, teacher, and friend. She worked at the Mississippi State Board of Health in Jackson, Mississippi and then transitioned to the educational sector for different organizations. Many lives of young people were touched by her years of teaching and mentoring. Charlotte started her educational career at Prentiss High School in Prentiss, Mississippi. She went on to serve in different capacities with the Job Corps Program. She was an educator and subsequent administrator at the Job Corps Center in Crystal Springs, Mississippi, director of the Job Corps Center in Franklin, North Carolina, and was the Center Director in Shreveport, Louisiana from 1989-1999. She then went on to work in the Caddo Parish School System as a teacher at Northwood High School where she retired in 2021.

“A TIME TO BUILD UP…”

Charlotte understood the commitment and value of being a dedicated Christian. She was a long-time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Shreveport, Louisiana. She sang in the choir and participated in many ways as a member of the church body.

“A TIME TO EMBRACE”

After her mother’s death, Charlotte was the family member who kept her family united and connected. She often facilitated communication to encourage the maintenance of strong, positive relationships among her siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, and others. She was trustworthy, respected, and loved. Her family enjoyed visiting her in her home because she always had such a loving and welcoming spirit. Her home was known as a haven of rest, recuperation, and comfort for all. Charlotte was an excellent cook who often shared recipes and cooked for others.

“A TIME TO DIE…”

How beautiful are the lives of those who in every way prove that God is real. The mighty oak retains its vigor for ages but falls at last. For humankind, death comes at all seasons and to all ages. Often, God sends no summons before him, but floats unseen on the breeze. Death comes on hushed footsteps to all. Thus, it came to our dear Charlotte. On Saturday, October 19, 2024, God sent his Angel of Mercy to take her to eternal rest. We loved her, but God loved her more. She has gone on now to live in her mansion with her starry crown. God called her to yonder’s shining shore. The golden gates were opened, a gentle voice said “come”, and with farewell unspoken she calmly entered home.

Naturally, our hearts are filled with sorrow when our loved ones are taken away from us, but toils and earthly burden bearings are exchanged for the repose of heaven. We thank God for a sweet and beautiful life, which leaves behind it a radiance of purity, goodness, peace and love.

Charlotte leaves to cherish her memories a daughter, Chantel Nyldevethe Nelson of Dallas, Texas; four sisters – Mildred (Reverend Charles W. Purnell) of Savannah, Georgia; Rosie Toliver of Benecia, California; Alfredia Harvey of Terry, Mississippi; and Gale Walker of Raymond, Mississippi; two brothers – Charles Nelson (Mary) Picayune, Mississippi; Pouncee Nelson (Adrienne) of Richmond, Virginia. She leaves nieces and nephews – Dwight Purnell, Elissa Purnell, Zenobie Purnell, Donna Toliver, Cynthia Capers (James), Altrich Harvey (Levoyn), Alexis Harvey (Iyesha), Brandi Walker Khan (Afzal), Beverly Walker Traver (Dylan), Brian Walker, Brooke Walker, Aurelia Nelson, Sheena Nelson, Jennifer Nelson and Keisha Nelson. Also cherishing her memory are great-nieces and nephews - Maya Capers; Amir, Amirah, Ali, and Aydin Khan; Jara, Jillian (James), Altrich, Jr., and Aaron Harvey; Basie Harvey; and Madden and Harlowe Traver.

She also leaves a host of loving relatives, cousins, friends and associates.

A major part of Charlotte’s enjoyment and service was her membership as a choir member of the New Dimensions Choral Society for the past 26 years. She was instrumental in providing many services to the organization including grant writing, clerical support and other administrative duties.
