Charlotte's obituary
Charlotte Dunning of Columbus, OH, passed away on June 19, 2024 at the age of 72 after her courageous battle with cancer. “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live." -Stuart Scott. Charlotte lived her life in a way that exuded a God centered love to everyone she came into contact with.
A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend, and mentor, Charlotte was one of the most selfless, loving people to grace the earth. She was an inspiration in the way she lived her life. She relished in finding ways to make people feel loved; whether it was spending quality time, finding a way to make you laugh, celebrating others, a listening ear, or by lending a helping hand. No act of kindness was too big, or too small. She was never too busy for a friend, or even a stranger in need. She was the type of person that made the world a better place.
To know Charlotte was to love her. She was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois but spent the majority of her life living in Columbus, Ohio where she made lifelong friendships working at Rock of Faith, Bricker & Eckler, and The Reynoldsburg City School District.
In her youth Charlotte was an avid runner and spent her time training on the trails at Blacklick Park. She was a lover of performing arts, with an eclectic taste. If you were lucky, she would quote lines from her favorite movies in regular conversations and then quiz you on what movie it was from. She was an aesthete. One of her favorite things to do was sit on her patio with a cup of coffee and watch as birds visited her trees. She loved sports. She was a devoted basketball fan, although she preferred to watch blowouts when her favorite teams were playing.
Though Charlotte is no longer with us, her memory shall live on. May the people she loved too strive to radiate a God centered love in all that they do.
1 Corinthians 13:4–5 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Charlotte is survived by her children, Karen, Ayana and Shakir; grandchildren, Janae and Deja; and great-grandchildren Janelle, Don, Nala, and Van, and extended family. In lieu of flowers, Charlotte's family asks that donations be made to the Arbor Day Foundation, where you can plant memorial trees in her name so that she may continue to impact lives.
