Charles "Charlie"'s obituary
Born and raised in the Birmingham, AL area, Charlie graduated from Minor High School in 1983. He then started a career in sales, ending up with Atlas Roofing Corporation for 23 years. Charlie earned many awards with Atlas, the Pillar of Leadership being one he was most proud of. He will be greatly missed by his co-workers and his customers. While with Atlas he attended Alabama University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in both Communication and Information Sciences in 2006.
Charlie loved Alabama football, attending every game he could. He was an avid fly fisherman, in love with all the beautiful places trout live. He loved to live life off the beaten path, taking the long way to anywhere, always saying, “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.” He and Quita would hop in his beloved Jeep “Goat” for a new adventure whenever they could, taking back roads to nowhere or head to their favorite places, the Smoky Mountains or Pensacola Beach. He was a walking trivia expert, loved books, Hemingway, the mountains, water, drawing, good Scotch, cornhole, his dogs, telling stories, music, hunting and shooting and shopping for his wife, (especially for shoes!), who he spoiled every chance he got. He loved to cook, we will all miss his famous spaghetti sauce! There was never a time when Charlie didn’t have a smile on his face. He loved people, helping them, making them laugh and regaling them with stories.
He is survived by his parents, Carl and Peggy Dates, brothers, Travis Dates (Wendy), Bran Dates (Denise), Ray Waldrop (Tracey) and sister Jeannie Waldrop Cross (Paul). He also leaves behind his Aunt Mel Whitten, who was like a second mother to him, his Aunt Ganett Hastings, Uncle & Aunt Ron & Joan Beard, Uncle & Aunt John & Carol Waldrop. His Father In Law, Malcomb Graves, In-laws Audrey Graves, Kitty & Bobby Foshee, Rachel Graves, Malcomb & Tina Graves and David Graves. His many nieces and nephews will miss him, along with an amazing circle of friends, including his "rent-a-kids", Abigail & Zoey and their Mom Rebecca.
He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas Ray Waldrop, Sr., his grandparents Buddy and Myra Waldrop, grandparents Edith and Hoyt Beard, his favorite Uncle Jack Whitten, who taught him a love for books and challenged him to learn as much as he could, his Uncle Larry Hastings and his dogs, Sniffles, Inga & Dakota.
This world lost a beautiful soul, a helping hand, a friend to all. He will be greatly missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. ROLL TIDE Charlie!!
A Celebration of Life will be held March 13th, 2021, at The Back Forty in Clanton, AL. All are welcome to attend! In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Helping Shepherds of Every Color or your local Animal Shelter.
