Chuck's obituary

Charles Lewis Cattaneo, age 87 of San Juan Capistrano, CA, was peacefully welcomed into heaven on Friday, December 3, 2021, with loved ones at his side. Charles, known as “Sonny,” “Chuck,” or “Papa” to family, loved ones, and friends, was born on September 26, 1934 to the late Mary (Leone) and Carlo Cattaneo in Boston, MA.

He was a man of many talents and ventures. He loved to have fun but he was always hard at work. He started his first job shining shoes at the age of eight in Copley Square. In his younger years, he was a competitive boxer and held a welter weight championship. He also was a SCUBA rescue diver who helped retrieve people who had fallen under frozen rivers. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a Korean War veteran. After his discharge from the navy, he moved to southern California with his young family and started his company, Crescent Contractors. It was during that point in his life that he discovered his love of flying and earned his pilot's license to fly small aircraft. After retiring from contracting, Chuck was the general property manager for Park Wellington condominiums in West Hollywood, where he joined the International Church of Christ. He remained actively involved in the church up until his passing.

Anyone who knew Chuck would describe him as the most generous person they had ever met. He loved God more than anything and he loved people well. He never hesitated to give whatever he had to anyone who needed it. His quick wit, charismatic sense of humor, brilliant storytelling, and adept dancing skills ensured he always stood out in a crowd.

His family was his pride and joy, and he loved them all dearly. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Charlotte Cattaneo, son Charles “Chuck” Cattaneo, and nieces Laura Showstead and Christina Showstead. He is survived by his sister Annmarie “Dolly” (Eddie) Niland; former wife Nina Cattaneo, daughter Debora (Gary) McDowell, son John “Johnny” Cattaneo, and son David Cattaneo; former wife Christina Cattaneo, daughter Alicia (Walter) Turner, and daughter Alayna (Jeffrey) Gibbons; grandsons Nicholas Cattaneo, Brian Cattaneo, Jackson Cattaneo, and Gabriel Turner; granddaughters Michelle (Aaron) Marlette, Danielle Cattaneo, Katherine “Katee” Cattaneo, Justina Cattaneo, Christine “Christy” (Shawn) Pagano, and Aria Turner; great-grandsons Elijah Cattaneo, Jase Marlette, Edwin Pagano, Shawn Pagano Jr.; great-granddaughters Anabel Zuel, Kloie Zuel, Audrey Cueto, Lyla Romans, Haven Marlette, and Marilyn Cattaneo; daughters-in-law Julia Phillips, Bonnie Henderson, and Danielle Cattaneo; nephews Craig (Katty) Showstead, Richard Showstead, Douglas Showstead, Duane Showstead, and David Martin; niece Mary Lou Martin; and many other beloved family members and dear friends.
