Charlie's obituary

Charles Leslie Bruce, 77, of Peterborough, NH, passed away on November 23, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, creativity, and unwavering support that touched the lives of his family, friends, and community.

Born on September 8, 1947, in Detroit, MI, to John Marshall Bruce and Lydia Edna Geohegan, Charlie's life was a testament to resilience and passion. As a young child, he miraculously survived a severe bout of meningitis and encephalitis that few thought he would overcome, an early indication of the fighting spirit that would define his life.

An IBM executive for three decades, Charlie was far more than his professional achievements. He met the love of his life, Kathy, on a blind date to the Detroit Symphony, where 25-cent tickets sparked a connection that would blossom into 53 years of marriage. They were married on March 7, 1971, at Martha Mary Chapel in Greenfield Village, Dearborn, MI, beginning a journey of shared adventure and deep commitment.

Charlie's true calling was being a father and community supporter. He was a constant presence in his children's lives - Krista, Michelle, Lauren, Robert, and Kathleen - never missing a concert, play, sporting event, or milestone. His passion for photography transformed these moments into lasting memories, documenting family life with an artist's eye and a father's love. He would travel to his daughters' rugby and lacrosse matches, camera in hand, generously sharing photos with teammates and creating year-end slideshows.

Music and arts were the heartbeat of the Bruce family. Inspired by his father's operatic bass voice, Charlie became a lifelong supporter of the arts. He signed his children up for music lessons, advocated for arts education during his tenure on the Wilton Board of Education, and was known for spontaneous sing-alongs during family road trips in the "Bruce Moose" - their beloved brown Suburban.

An adventurous spirit defined Charlie. Whether riding his Harley Davidson, scattering seagulls on Martha's Vineyard beaches, greeting strangers with a boisterous "Howdy!" while wearing his signature black Stetson, or sharing his love of science fiction and stargazing, he lived life with unbridled enthusiasm and humor.

Charlie is survived by his wife Kathy; his children Krista, Michelle, Lauren, Robert, and Kathleen; his grandchildren Cassidy, Cora, Ryan, Hailey, and Nora; his siblings Kay Boemer and John Bruce. He was preceded in death by his parents John Marshall Bruce and Lydia Edna Geohegan, and his brother, Michael Bruce.

Beyond his family, Charlie was a dedicated community servant. He volunteered with the CT Academy for Education in Math, Science & Technology, served eight years on the local Board of Education, and was a medic in the National Guard. His commitment to education and community earned him national recognition.

A lover of the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Beethoven, with a penchant for science fiction and photography, Charlie Bruce lived a life of generosity, creativity, and profound love. He didn't just attend his children's events; he illuminated them. He didn't just take photographs; he told stories. He didn't just support his community; he transformed it.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Scott Farrar's Jennie Scott Legacy Fund, 11 Elm St., Peterborough, NH 03458. A celebration of life will be held next year, honoring a man who truly understood that showing up is the greatest gift one can give.
