Chuck and I were grad students at UCD in the early 1970's. Our paths crossed again due to our research interest in breeding yellow flesh potatoes. He was a good, generous friend and colleague and he will be missed. My sincere condolences to his family.

I don't remember a time when Dr. Brown was not cheerful. He always had a smile on his face like something good happened to him recently. He was a great scientist.
Kay and Family:
So sorry to hear this news. Chuck was one of my favorite colleagues - I loved his eccentric nature! He did so much to help advance my career and I'll be forever grateful for his mentoring, support, and confidence. He will surely be missed but never forgotten! His contributions to the potato industry are immense and will bear fruit for decades to come. Much love, Brian A. Charlton (Oregon State University, KBREC)

It is very hard to say good bye to someone like Chuck. Mr President as I called him. He was the first colleague in the Pacific Northwest to reach out to me to welcome me and my family here. Our bond was clear, I am Peruvian and when he find out that, he had many stories to share about my country. My deepest condolences to the family. He will truly be missed. Hasta luego Chuck !!
My Condolence to the family.
Such a great person. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Claire, Anna, and Kay--
When I was just a young pup of a scientist, still wet behind the ears as they say, and took my first SY job in Prosser, Chuck was always looking out for me to assure my success in the system. He was casual about it but very open and direct with his advice. Your husband and Dad didn't have to reach out, but he did, and for my 17 years of service to ARS, I truly appreciate it. Looking out for one another--isn't that what it's all about?
Dear Kay and family, Carla and I share our condolences with you all. I have many memories of our times together in Lima and later in North America too. Chuck was a great thinker and articulated his thoughts so well at our CIP annual meetings which stimulated great discussion. Chuck’s experience as a breeder in Peru is now impacting potato nutrition and health in North America. Best Wishes, Peter & Carla VanderZaag
Chuck was a solidly good human. He had a big heart and a ready smile. Not having his kindness in the world is a loss. May all take comfort in remembering the thoughtful goodness he radiated.
Our condolences to Kay and all the family. We got to know Chuck later in his life, and we enjoyed his bright, intelligent company and especially the twinkle in his eye! We will miss him.
Our condolences to Kay, Claire, Anna and all of their families.

I have lots of good memories of Chuck, but one I saw many times was of him walking across the WSU-Prosser parking lot from his lab to the main building wearing his typical attire: bib overalls. He looked more like a farm worker than most farm workers. I think he liked that. I sometimes imagined a visitor asking "That's the great scientist?" Yes it was.
Goodol' Chuck. A great human being. We had the privilege of hosting him every summer in the Toluca Valley by the end of last century (1995-1999). He was the leader of the USDA potato breeders, testing their materials for late blight resistance. He loved to speak spanish and was easily identified with his Mexican coleagues.

We just came to know of the loss of our dear colleague Chuck Brown. My wife (Usha) and I fondly remember our days (1978-1984) when Chuck and Kay arrived in Lima to work with the International Potato Center. We remember the joy when the girls were born. Kay and Chuck visited our home in Lima many times and we also visited them. Our next opportunity to see. Kay and Chuck with the girls were in Ithaca where he spent his sabbatical year. Chuck was also an External Reviewer for our potato late blight project in Toluca, Mexico. He provided valuable advice on how to breed new potato varieties with resistance to potato late blight disease.

Usha and I will miss Chuck's smile, his pleasant nature, and his immense knowledge of potato breeding. It was a big shock to hear the loss and we pray for his soul to rest in peace. Our sincere condolences to Kay and the girls.

Chuck was a great scientist. His work spanned from basic science to applied research. He contributed significantly to the field of potato genetics and breeding over his lifetime. Most importantly, he made a meaningful impact on people and communities; for example, the Ozette potato grew for over two centuries by the Makah tribe native to Neah Bay was "rediscovered" and revived through our research and outreach effort.
You were a great boss, colleague, and friend. I will miss you, Chuck. Linhai
