Dear family,
I am very sorry for your big loss
Chuck was such a sweet, spontaneous man with a lot of humor. I will always, have warm memories of him.

Especially when my parents, sister and i, visit you all in America. The give me a big smile on my face
Little comfort is that he no longer has to suffer

Lots of strength a for now and in the future.

Grande besos y abrazos

I've worked with some amazing people over a long career, but Chuck is the one that always brings a smile when I remember that time. He was a fantastic scientist and a truely wonderful person. I count that time working with him, learning from him, and getting to know him as one of the great blessings in my life. Kay and Anna and Claire... my condolences... he was a truely great individual in so many ways. He will be missed by many.

Wow....don’t know where to begin with the loss of such a fine man. Chuck was very instrumental for me as I admired his passion, and knowledge of people and potatoes. His smile was broad, intelligence deep, and I have a void now. For his family, I have many thoughts and prayers for you. May his legacy run deep.....Miss you immensely, Chuck. Thank you for all you did for me....Love, Jeff Bragg

I was so sorry to hear that Chuck had died. He was a friend and fellow scientist. We did a number of research studies together and publish a number of scientific papers.
We first worked together on a virus problem spread by a nematode but later worked a virus spread by aphids. I suspect our working together started at least 20 years ago.
He truly was someone who was gracious and caring, smart and thinking, fun and helpful. I have and will continue to cherish the time I had the time miss him.

Chuck will be greatly missed both personally and professionally. I still use many of Chuck's breeding clones as parental material in the Aberdeen, ID potato breeding program and his professional legacy yet lives on. His love of potatoes was always obvious as well as his love of his family. The beautiful quote (below) from his obituary really touched me and I hope Kay and family find solace and peace during this difficult time.

“The enduring love of families and friends is a bag of precious gems. The perception that your children and grandchildren are fulfilled is like a calming breeze developing at twilight for a deep sleep.”

Although I haven’t seen Chuck in over thirty years, I see in the photos and wonderful comments that he hadn’t changed over that time, always with a genuine smile, a will to help others and a love for his family and career. May he rest in peace and sincere condolences to the family he leaves behind. David and Rocio.
Dear Kay, Claire, and Anna: Be blessed with peace and comfort. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Deepest sympathy.
Peace and love always,

My heart goes out to you, Kay, Anna and Claire, and families. It was always a pleasure to have time to talk to Chuck, back in the WSU-IAREC days of volleyball and bridge games, when he was passionately discussing potato variety traits, when he got me to be Babushka for the Twelfth Night celebrations. For his entire USDA, ARS, Prosser and USDA, ARS, TTFVRU career, I enjoyed discussing his research, his family and the idiosyncrasies of federal employment with him.
Chuck was an irritatingly dominate opponent in Scrabble, a good sailing shipmate, and a great friend. His quest for knowledge brought rangers, on at least one of the San Juan islands, to their knees trying to identify all the flora and fauna in Chuck’s view. His intellect and humor kept me laughing with him to the end. His greatest love, Kay. His greatest pride, his family. I was privileged to know him. Don Lewis
My condolences to Kay and the daughters. Chuck and I bonded as potato brothers at UC Davis while I was working on my Ph.D. It was destiny that Chuck got the Prosser position. He was meant to continue his work on potato and he contributed so much to make his part of the world a better place. It is a privilege to breed potatoes but it also is a life privilege to have potato colleagues like Chuck!
I have so many fond memories of hanging with my buddy Chuck (and Kay, of course). The image/motif I can’t lose in my mind as I think of Chuck’s spirit is his amazing, consistent, almost mischievous-toned “chuckle” – that “ha, ha” shorthand sound he could be counted on to make in so many circumstances. In fact, I never thought before of the irony of how my buddy named Chuck captivated me with a trait that mirrored his name!

In the late 1970's, my wife Jenni and I traveled to Peru (where Chuck worked at the Centro Internacional de la Papa as a potato virologist) and we journied with Chuck and Kay for an intimate trip to Machu Picchu. In those days, with “connections,” it was possible for a handful of folks to sleep overnight at a small government owned tourist hotel. The 1978 picture I posted is of Kay and Chuck and myself likely in late afternoon or early morning – after all the tourists had mounted the buses back to Cuzco; the quiet and majesty of Machu Picchu was unforgettable.

Chuck could be impish and summon his inner child, and yet, so deep and wise and solid. Chuck was deeply spiritual (we enjoyed on occasion meetings at the Religious Society of Friends) and was curious of all things metaphysical, but had a healthy distrust of parts of organized religion. Kay reconnected us only in the past year and I spoke with him by phone on a number of precious occasions. He was at peace; he told me of a talk he had with a Chaplain who shared the observation “no one knows the day they will pass.” He thought it wonderful and enough that he had the blessings of his precious and timeless bond of his family.

Kay was devoted beyond explanation and in the end, he remarkably used the phrase “we” (Kay and Chuck) almost exclusively in detailing events and describing his feelings.

Kay, Anna and Claire, I know there is a new star in the heavens that is Chuck’s spirit. Although we lost touch for too many years, I loved him as few other men I have known. His legacy endures for so many.
