Charles's obituary

In Loving Memory of Charles "Chuck" Owen Bratu

Hendersonville, NC — Charles "Chuck" Owen Bratu, a man whose life was a living testament to faith, mentorship, and service, passed away on April 3, 2026, at the age of 52.

Born on April 14, 1973, in White Pine, Michigan, Chuck moved to Hendersonville, NC in 1980. After graduating from West Henderson High School, his deep desire to serve the Lord led him to Fruitland Baptist Bible College, where he studied for the ministry. This foundation of faith became the North Star for his life’s work; his love for the Lord Jesus was the prime motivator for every goal he set and every step he took throughout his walk in life.

Chuck’s ministry was both local and global, marked by a heart that knew no borders. He served as the pastor of a small church in Brevard, North Carolina, for eight years, providing steady spiritual leadership and care to his congregation before answering the call to mentor youth as a basketball coach at North Henderson High School. His mission also took him far beyond the mountains of Western North Carolina, as he traveled to Mexico and Haiti to spread the love of Christ and minister to communities with a true servant’s heart.

Whether he was in the pulpit, on the basketball court, or in the Media Center, Chuck was a hero to those who knew him. He was a mentor who walked alongside his students and players, empowering them to find their own strength and character.

Above all his accomplishments, Chuck’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jami Bratu; his three children, Hawley, Ally, and Samuel Bratu (Spouce Katie Bratu); his parents, Dan and Gina Bratu; his brother, Greg Bratu; and his niece, Breana Bratu. He also leaves behind many beloved family members in Ironwood, Michigan, and Morden, Manitoba, Canada, as well as a vast community of friends, former students, and fellow believers who were forever changed by his kindness and his unwavering commitment to his calling.
