Charles's obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Charles A. (Chuck) Roberts. Chuck died on June 12, 2022 at the age of 80, after a valiant six-month struggle with heart and lung disease.
Chuck was born on July 13, 1941 in Berwyn, Illinois to Charles Bertrand Roberts and Elizabeth Grace (Fish) Roberts. He is survived by his beloved wife, Valarie (Fox) Cass Roberts and six children: Jeff (Chanda) Roberts of Maui, Hawaii, David (Jean) Roberts of Cincinnati, OH, Gregory (Kathleen) Roberts of Naperville, IL, Lynne (Chris Keating) Roberts of Chicago, IL, Andrew (Melissa) Roberts of Lake Orion, MI and Eric (Casey) Roberts of La Crescenta, CA. He is mourned by two step-children: Scott (Beth) Stout of Oxford, MI and Jill Stout of Orion, MI, as well as Carolyn Cass (Rafael) Lorente of University Park, MD, Timothy (Veronica) Cass of Pontiac, MI and Susan (Shane Tunnell) Cass of Euless, TX. Chuck also leaves 13 grandchildren and 5 step-grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by his four siblings, Jean (Roberts) Hegner, Nancy (Roberts) Garrity, James Roberts, and Judy (Roberts) Zadak, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Chuck began his teaching career in 1963 at Washington Junior High in Pontiac, Michigan, then moved to Kennedy Junior High, Eastern Junior High and finally retired from Pontiac Northern High School. He also taught at the Pontiac School of Performing Arts. During his 33-year career as an English and Drama teacher, he shared his love of theater with hundreds of students. He directed student plays such as Li'l Abner, Annie Get Your Gun, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and A Christmas Carol. He also ran the Mime Troupe at Pontiac Northern and performed and directed at the Clarkston Village Players. Chuck loved teaching so much that upon his retirement from the public school system, he continued to teach English as a Second Language to Japanese and Taiwanese expatriates and their families. In retirement, Chuck enjoyed gardening and cycling the numerous trails of southern Michigan with Jim and Mary Brigham, and was the founding member of both the Stonebroke and Gregory Beach Bicycle Clubs.
Chuck mostly loved gathering with family and friends at Stonebroke, his home in Ortonville, MI, where he created his own Theater in The Woods to host performances, tell stories and teach acting to his grandchildren. He instilled in his children the love of camping, storytelling, and performing jokes and charades around the campfire every summer with his best friend John Cass – first at Kibby Creek Campground, then later at Stonebroke, where friends and family continue to gather to create memories and fill hearts with love and laughter. Chuck (Chick, Dad, Daddy-o, Pops, Father, Grandpa) had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed life to the fullest. He gave his children a lifelong model of appreciation of gathering in celebration of life and each other. His smile, laugh, and hugs will be remembered with great fondness.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Chuck on July 16, 2022 at 4:00 at Stonebroke. All who knew him and would like to take part in the celebration are welcome. Please email stonebrokedad@yahoo.com if you would like to attend. We would so enjoy having you join us.
