We have truly lost a great person. My condolences to the family. We are fortunate to have shared time with him.

We were so sad to hear of Charlie’s death.

He was an original; a true Christian spreading the good news with joy wherever he went. He was an activist for social justice and a speaker of the truth . A wonderful example for us all!

He was our family’s priest.

He married my husband and me in Tustin 491/2 years ago in my sister’s back yard.

He baptized our daughter 45 years ago, married our other daughter and Baptized 2 of our grand children!

He will be missed!

Such a sweet man! Also, kind of a character! He always loved the way I read the bible readings at church, using both hands in the air to emphasize a point. He was so friendly and welcoming to all. We are already missing him!
My condolences to Charles's family. Veterans For Peace (VFP) presented awards to Father Ara on two occasions. We will dedicate a Peace Pole in his memory in Palm Springs very soon.
Such a warm, wonderful man. His light will surely be missed. 🙏

Sending our deepest condolences. I’m so sorry for your loss. He lived a beautiful life and taught us so much along the way. I’m grateful we had the blessing of knowing him through SHC. Father Ara referred to himself as my confirmation sponsor in spirit. God bless you and your family. Barbara & Javier Castillo. ⚜️

In response to "What did Charles love to do?"
Charles was the first person to greet me in our community; walked by the pool and introduced himself,  followed by "Are you a Democrat?!" 😅 Such a ray of sunshine in my life upon every encounter, phone call, & email. Your life mattered. Love to Shirley & family
His legacy is an everlasting blessing for generations to come.

We don't know many folks at Christ of the Desert, but Charlie was a standout.  He was so friendly with everyone and always had stories to tell.  We knew some of the same people from LA so it was fun to reminisce.  We'll always remember Charlie enthusiastically singing out at Mass.

We didn't know about his social action background.  What a wonderful and courageous man!

Our condolences to Charlie's wife, kids, grandkids and sisters.  We bet that the life you shared with Charlie was never dull!

With gratitude for a life well lived,  Pat and Jude

I had the honor of spending many hours with Charlie when he sublet office space from me in order to meet with clients for psychotherapy and premarital counseling. We consulted about our cases, shared stories about how we met our spouses, about our children, and about our faith journeys, he as a Catholic priest and me as an observant Jew. We laughed a lot and greeted one another affectionately with  a "Shalom." He was an inspiration to me as a person of integrity and commitment to the common good.  And so I say, "Sholom, Charlie. Your memory will live on as a blessing for many whose lives you have touched."

  • I was sad because I had lost a wonderful treasured friend when I heard the news of Charles's passing, but also I felt glad for him because he made it through this life to be in the next continued life with our Lord and Savior Jesus. To be absent in the body is to be present with our Lord. . . and it is like Job said, 1:21 The Lord gives and the Lord takes away May the name of the Lord be blessed. What a treasure Charlie's life was to us all. Thanks be to G-d.  HE LOVED , LOVED.

I met Charlie ten years ago when I first moved to Palm Desert Greens. When he said he was the president of the Democratic Club, I was hooked. Plus, we shared the fact that the love of his life somewhat altered his career path. Same with me as I was a therapist working with single people as a “professional single.” I met my husband & became a corporate trainer, instead!

One of the sacraments (daughters baptism) that he performed for our family. He will be missed dearly.

I met Charlie in the late 90s, when I became a member of the Hubert H Humphrey Democratic Club in Cerritos, California.  He was the passion, the face, and the faith of the Democratic Party in this part of Los Angeles County. As a fellow Catholic, I resonated with how he articulated and aligned his faith with political action through the Democratic Party. He was a role model for me, when I was elected to the Artesia City Council in 2007, and I continue to rely on my deep faith as I continue my public service. Thank you, Charlie! My condolences to your wife and family. May Charlie Ara rest in peace!🙏🏽✝️🙏🏽
Shirley and family,  Charlie touched all of our lives in so many positive ways! He will be remembered with love and fond memories,  I will be making a donation to the Transplants for Children Foundation here in San Antonio.  Hugs and love, Virginia Shalhoub Cardin.
